Biographical Information

What in your experience has prepared you for the work of a Supreme Court Justice?

The New York State court system is complex and fragmented. The League of Women Voters of New York State supports measures to obtain a unified, statewide court system, consisting of a minimum number of trial courts of broad jurisdiction. Please share your opinion on reforming the NYS Court system.

Bio Justice Ambro has served as the Supervising Judge of Suffolk County Court, where all felony trials in Suffolk County are conducted, since January 2021.
I served as a legal Aid attorney from 1985 until 2002 trying felony cases in Suffolk County Court. In 2002 I became.Law Clerk to Supreme Court justice C.Randall Hinrichs where I served until my election to the Supreme Court in 2012.
The New York State court system is complex, but not fragmented. Different kinds of cases require different treatment and so go to specialized courts.

Judge Mullen is a lifelong resident of Long Island. She has been married for over 25 years and is a mother of 3 children. She is an avid runner and has completed 20 marathons.
As a sitting Judge with over thirty years of legal experience, I have the knowledge and skill to be an effective Supreme Court Justice.

I was elected to the Family Court bench and began serving in January 2022. In 2023, the Suffolk County Court Officers Benevolence Association named me Judge of the Year. I co-chair the Suffolk County Access to Justice Committee and serve on the Equal Justice Committee. I have also co-chaired the Suffolk County Bar Association Matrimonial and Family Law Subcommittee and served on the courts’ Black History Month and Women in the Courts committees. I joined the New York State Unified Court System in 2016 as principal law clerk to the Suffolk County District Administrative Judge. Before taking the bench, I served as a court attorney referee, special counsel for town and village courts, and public information officer.
I have a strong belief that the public should have access to the courts and a clear understanding of legal processes. As co-chair of the Access to Justice Committee and a member of the Equal Justice Committee, I work to make the courts more welcoming accessible to the public.

I have been in the practice of law since 1985. I have been a judge for the last eight years and was recently voted judge of the year. I have handled all kinds of cases in the last 42 years and all those who appear in front of me, attorneys and litigants are always treated fairly
Because the New York system is fragmented, I support a unified statewide system where everyone in New York will have the same understanding of the court in which they appear and the rules, procedures and this will ensure everyone will have belief in a fair system.
I have been a sitting Supreme Court Justice for 14 years, having first been elected in 2012 in a competitive race.
I am always in favor of improving our court system. We particularly need to take action to reduce the workload of the Appellate Division, Second Department so that appeals can be decided quicker.

Over 16 years as a District Court judge, I have presided over more than 100,000 civil and criminal cases and seen them through to completion. As Coordinating Judge of the Outlying District Courts, I oversee the civil parts of five courthouses. For eight years, I have also handled guardianship matters in Supreme Court. My earlier work as a federal law clerk, law partner, and court arbitrator, along with teaching law and mentoring judges, has strengthened my legal analysis and judgment. I would bring this breadth of experience and a commitment to applying the law fairly to the work of a Supreme Court Justice.
As Coordinating Judge, I have overseen the implementation of court and filing procedures that simplify the process for litigants. These include implementing the Office of Court Administration’s guidelines for electronic filing of pleadings and preparing templates and sample forms available to the public. These steps are in the right direction, and there is more to do to ensure litigants can understand court procedures, navigate the system, and access justice without unnecessary delay.

I have exceptional experience as a Suffolk County Prosecutor, Defense Attorney, Town Attorney, and have been a judge for 12 years, including being an Acting Supreme Court Justice for the past three years.
It is not appropriate for a sitting judge to opine on this topic.
