City of Austin Proposition I

The Ballot Language and Explanation are repeated identically under For and Against.City of Austin Charter Amendments Background: The City Charter sets up how Austin city government is organized and outlines basic rules for how it operates. It also shows how residents can be involved in the City's decision-making process. Austin voters will consider eight proposed amendments to the City Charter, Propositions C through J. Most resulted from a City review of the Charter. Proposition I was placed on the ballot through a citizen petition. Each proposition would change a different part of the Charter and is voted on separately.

Shall the City Charter be amended to require an Independent Affordability and Efficiency Initiative on a regular basis and before any tax rate increase election and requiring the independent contractor to identify annual and multi-year savings that exceed the cost of the contractor’s service?
Proposition I is a citizen-initiated amendment that would require the City to regularly hire an independent contractor to review City spending and operations and identify ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency. The contractor would be required to identify annual and long-term savings that exceed the cost of the review. An independent review would also be required before the City could hold an election asking voters to approve an increase in the property tax rate. The City already has an efficiency review underway. In 2026, the City approved a contract of up to $5.23 million for an outside contractor to review City departments over several years. A vote FOR would add these independent review requirements to the City Charter.

A vote AGAINST would not add these requirements.
