We have fully implemented the Science of Reading in our elementary schools. We are using structured literacy and when report card data is released in a few weeks we will see the improvement. Our number of 3rd graders needing summer remediation to advance to 4th grade was drastically reduced in 25-26. I feel that if we stay the course we will continue to see our students scoring higher and summer remediation numbers will continue to decrease.
I do not want our elementary students spending countless time on Chromebooks. Our problem lies in the fact that state testing is on the computer so we must incorporate them to some degree to make sure they are proficient test takers. Hopefully we will continue to decrease their use. There are many current studies to prove that teacher led, student engaged classrooms are the most effective. Where they do have some value, I am stiving to remove them from K-2 and severly limit their use in grades 3 through 5.
There is no doubt that we are seeing much more student engagement since we instituted the no cell phone policy. Even our students will tell you that they are more engaged in classes, in the cafeteria and at student functions without the distraction of the cell phone. To my knowledge this policy is working.
Discipline will forever be an issue that needs attention. We contune to implement ways to curtail behaviors that inhibit the learning environment. Our elementary schools use the Chick-fil-a Core Essentials program and our middle schools are using the Seven Mind Sets program both are educational in the areas of bullying, making good decisions and how to be good members of the community. Our Flex schedule in middle and high school provides time for enrichment, remediation, counseling and mental health awareness. Our district leadership is sponsoring "No Tardies Parties" at the elementary level, and it’s working. There are more programs in place to help our students be successful than ever before.
I am pleased with the improvements and direction of the SDOC. With the implementation of the Centigix emergency badges and metal detections systems our schools are the safest ever. We have implemented a training program for new administrators, a student leadership program and redirected our long term building program to make the building of a much needed new Keowee Elementary our number one priority. We have implemented technology on our buses so that drivers can account for every rider from the moment they are picked up and when they arrive at drop off. Keep your eyes on us as we release future info on new projects like Endeavor Oconee, the expansion of dual enrollment and expansion of career pathways in fire protection and forestry.
