Georgetown voters initially approved a dedicated quarter-cent sales tax for street maintenance and repairs in 2002. State law requires that voters approve the reauthorization of the sales tax every four years. The most recent reauthorization was in 2022.
The reauthorization of the local sales and use tax in the City of Georgetown, Texas, at the rate of one-fourth (¼) of one percent (1%) to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.
If Proposition A passes:
The City estimates that the tax will produce around $7.2 million in the current fiscal year. This revenue will be dedicated to street and sidewalk repairs. The reauthorization will not increase the sales tax rate in Georgetown, which will remain at 8.25%
If Proposition A fails:
Georgetown has been using funds obtained through a quarter percent sales tax as its primary source for street maintenance and repairs since voters first approved the tax in 2002. If voters cast their ballots against the reauthorization, that sales tax will expire “on the fourth anniversary of the date the tax originally took effect or on the first day of the first calendar quarter occurring after the fourth anniversary of the date the tax was last reauthorized.” Texas Tax Code, Section 327.07. The City’s sales tax rate would drop to 8%. The City would need to identify another revenue source for street repairs.
