Kanawha County - South Charleston - Municipal Judge

A Municipal Judge presides over a municipal court and handles violations of municipal ordinances and other matters assigned to the court by the municipality's charter or ordinances. Municipal courts may hear certain criminal matters and impose penalties authorized by municipal law. The office may be elected or appointed, depending on the municipality, and the term and additional qualifications are established by the municipality's charter or ordinances. Candidates must undergo a criminal background check, and certain criminal convictions make a person ineligible. A law degree is not required, but judges who are not attorneys must complete required legal training and continuing education.
