I have worked over 30 years as a public servant, first with delinquent youth, then as a probation/parole agent, later as a manager and currently as a specialist, ensuring offenders are presented the opportunity to receive resources and services necessary to be successful within their community.
Through my career I've learned that many people who took wrong turns in life lacked the education or resources that would have increased their probability for success. As a result they turned to alternative means for survival. I've worked with individuals who had little or no support who in turn failed to learn the appropriate life skills necessary to effectively navigate the classroom, workforce and life. Being a part of the Board will position me to ensure our children are given a great start in life by providing them with a high quality education and a strong support system.
Children thrive when they are seen, listened to and supported. When a child understands you are invested in their success they work harder. I want to ensure that in addition to a quality education, children's mental health is a factor, as this helps not only the individual child but also their peers insomuch as unaddressed mental health issues can become a disruption to others who are also in the learning environment.
Closing the learning gap will continue to be necessary moving forward, to ensure foundational literacy. Additionally, keeping up with ever changing technology and its effects on the educational experience and workforce preparedness is paramount. Social pressures and mental health continue to be a problem that must be addressed. Finally, addressing each of these require funding and resources, which will always be a challenge for school districts.
I am an 18 year resident of Grand Blanc. I am the wife of a public servant and the mother of a high school sophomore. I grew up in a disadvantaged community with working parents who ensured my siblings and I knew their love and support and who successfully guided me through life. I am a graduate of MSU. I know that the success of a community begins with the success of the school system.
