Campaign Message Flint deserves leadership committed to helping unite our city, willing to do the hard work to better the lives of residents, and focused on addressing the root causes of issues affecting our community. These are the ideas that Dakota will bring to Council. We live in a city built for almost three times our current population, and that means every resident here has to do the work of two others not here yet. By working across the city and not against it, updating our zoning codes, and encouraging growth everywhere we can, Flint can and will move forward
An attribute I have is a profound belief in democracy- the idea of working together for a common goal to better the lives of those who depend on their elected officials. That means that I might not get everything I wanted, and you might not get everything you wanted, but we worked together to find a common ground.
One of my main goals in Flint is to help us grow as a city. We are built on a system meant for almost three-times the size we currently are, and we can achieve that goal by promoting the construction of multi-use buildings in areas like the Corunna Road Corridor- an area of the city that is already designed to be a walkable business and residential space. Another priority of mine is to change the narrative of Flint. We have a thriving arts, cultural, food, and recreation scene, and that needs to be promoted more. The State of Michigan has a blueprint for something similar, and I want to utilize that to help bring more residents and businesses here.
I believe that attending neighborhood meetings is one of the best ways to keep in touch with the community, hear their needs, and see how you can help. It is the responsibility of elected officials to be there when those they represent have concerns or ideas. But sometimes there are voices in other organizations, clubs, and groups that need to be heard too, so it’s important to be open to faith, social, and issue-based groups as well. Above all, though, is having open lines of communication through phone calls and emails, so constituents don’t have to wait for monthly meetings to happen for a problem to be addressed.
Yes, because one of the most serious issues facing Flint right now is a lack of trust. A lack of trust in the Council and the Administration. By swearing to follow an ethics agreement, elected officials can be held to a higher standard than just giving their word, they are making more than a promise to those who depend on them.
