I have served in many community advocacy roles, including support for families experiencing domestic violence, crisis housing, veterans support and services for vulnerable and disabled people. I am skilled in program development and grant writing. I have experienced homelessness, home ownership, and everything in between, I bring lived experience to my work.
I am an out of the box thinker. I understand the problems our city is facing and have skills to help shape healthy city government; including collaborating with other government entities, agencies, businesses, and most importantly, citizens. I am a fiscal conservative who will be a good steward of your tax dollars. I listen to my constituents, I respond, I follow through.
Economic development is #1. A healthy mix of business is essential to increase the tax base which reduces tax burden on citizens. We need to remove planning and zoning barriers that cause businesses to locate outside the city limits. We need to put tax exempt properties back on the tax rolls.
Adequate housing for people of all income levels is also key. Housing development increases the tax base and attracts workers. Finally, addressing public safety issues supports a healthy, community.
As a career community advocate, I have learned to communicate well with people of all socioeconomic classes, races, and abilities. I actively seek input from homeowners, renters, business, and those on the margins. I listen to and value their stories, I am committed to bringing their concerns and their solutions to the table.
I will maintain honest engagement with citizens, city management, businesses, and other stakeholders. It is important that we communicate issues clearly and accurately, especially in discussing difficult financial issues. Our stakeholders are better able to bring creative solutions to the table if they have a clear understanding of Bemidji’s challenges and resources.
