I have been a teacher for seventeen years, in 3 different states, and have won a national teacher of the year award. I believe I know what works and what doesn’t work in schools
I believe Greenville County Schools are massively failing students. Furthermore, they are just raising taxes and creating a large bureaucratic central office that does nothing to help students.
The inflated budget and false graduation rate the county flaunts.
We need to empower teachers to lead classrooms and not overburden them with unnecessary paperwork and meetings. If a student is disruptive a teacher shouldn’t have to fill out fifty forms and make seven phone calls before that student is removed. Teachers need to be able to teach without absurd distractions.

The experiences that I bring to this conversation are directly connected to our years of service.

Understanding our community. Looking at the tough decisions through the lens of “what is best for our students” vs “the politics of the day”. Making sure that our students are successful!

Our graduation rates, and state assessment scores, are higher than ever. Our teachers are receiving the salary and recognitions they deserve. Our administrative costs are the lowest in the state.

I have spent my entire professional career as an executive in the construction industry. I am fortunate to have the skills of understanding business operations. Our service is to students, our product is their success, but in the end our District is a business.
A passion to serve my community and a love of public education.

As a child, both of my parents were involved in schools, I believe in the same. I see our work as not only student success, but economic development.

When a business wants to invest in a community they use the local schools as a bench mark for their businesses future success. I want to make sure that Greenville County is successful, and that our families, students, citizens and businesses understand why Greenville is a great place to live, work and succeed.

Having spent my entire life in Greenville, I believe in where we live and what we do!
Recruiting and retaining teachers!

This is a reason why our District focuses on making sure teacher salary rates are some of the best. In addition to our teachers, our support staff (Counselors, Bus Drivers, Aides, Administrative Staff, Maintenance, etc.) deserve to receive the best possible financial support for their work.

Financial oversight is also a high priority. Every year the District faces cost increases and mandates that give the Trustees little to no room for budget adjustments.

For example, over the last 10 years we have seen a 162% increase in insurance rates. We have also made conscious choices. For example, over the last 10 years the District has spent over $100 million dollars on school safety and security.
I will always support any effort to ensure that our teachers are highly qualified and properly paid. The two best investments any school district can make toward student success is a quality teacher in the classroom, and a quality principal in the school.

I will also support any affordable effort to reduce student teacher ratios. Over the last 10 years our school district has worked very diligently to reduce these ratios at all grade levels. I will continue to support those efforts.

Our district also has developed a remarkable program, GATE, which supports professionals from business becoming classroom teachers. We have grown this program by over 500% in recent years, I will work to ensure that these opportunities remain in place
