House - State Representatives serve in the Minnesota House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the state legislature. They write and vote on legislation to create, repeal, or change state laws affecting many issues, like health care, the environment, and the economy. They also vote on state taxes and state spending.
My top 3 priorities are education reform, healthcare, and sensible gun control reform. Education is fundamental in developing the tools children need to compete on a level playing field and to be equipped to navigate ongoing challenges from technological changes. Adequate healthcare is essential to the wellbeing of everyone . Due to the draconian cuts imposed by Congress, Minnesotans have lost or can’t afford coverage and many hospitals and other healthcare providers have been put at risk. Therefore, we must intervene where possible to ameliorate these impacts. Gun violence is at an unacceptable level as we have witnessed the assignation of Speaker Hartman, the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School.
The drivers of inflation are the war with Iran and tariffs imposed by President Trump. These causes are outside our jurisdiction to impact legislatively. We can however lobby our Congressional delegation to pass the War Powers Act and direct the President to end the conflict and also encourage them to challenge in court the new round of tariffs with Canada which will further exacerbate inflation in MN. Meanwhile we can maintain a regulatory environment where business can thrive.
I would continue to ban the use of seclusion rooms for preK-3 and tightened guidelines for suspensions both of which disproportionately impact children of color. Students cannot learn when they are out of the classroom and it inhibits the development of their social skills. On-going support of the READ ACT is essential. This will offset factors which have caused disparities in literacy rates among children of color.
I support the adoption of the Equal Rights Amendment. It should not be controversial that woman should be entitled under law to the same treatment as men. Unfortunately, there are some legacy legislate provisions that have inculcated inequities and with the adoption of this measure they would be vitiated in one swoop.
One of the potentially largest threats to clean air and water in the immediate future is the unrestrained proliferation of data centers. I am not against such centers per se, but believe the must be constrained by regulations which will minimize there impact on noise pollution, ground water pollution and over usage, increase in thermal pollution . Therefore I support a statewide moratorium until these issues are resolved.
Sensible gun control regulations are at the heart of ensuring safe communities. We can both honor citizens 2nd Amendment rights while providing common sense protections. This would include for example :outlawing assault rifles, limiting magazine capacity, strict safe storage provisions, etc.
I support public financing of elections in order remove the influence of money in politics, Unfortunately, even if the Minnesota legislature passed such a measure it would have limited effect.
That is because a lot of the guidelines are governed by federal not state law.( e. g., presidential and congressional races).
