My top three priorities are affordability, fraud, and education. Minnesota families are feeling the cost of higher government spending, fees, mandates and regulations. We need to control spending and consider how government decisions affect costs for families and businesses. We also need to stop fraud before taxpayer money goes out the door through better verification and oversight. In education, I support strong academics, STEM and career and technical education, fewer state mandates, and more flexibility for teachers, schools and families.
State government cannot control inflation, but it can control the costs it adds. I would reduce unnecessary spending, taxes, fees and mandates; streamline permitting; and avoid regulations that make housing, child care and doing business more expensive. Minnesota should be a place where businesses can compete and grow, families can afford to live, and hard work and innovation are rewarded.
Education is the great equalizer, which is why it is one of my top priorities. Every child deserves an excellent education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. I support Minnesota opting into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit, providing scholarship funds for tutoring, enrichment and alternative schooling without new state spending. I also support safe communities and a strong economy with good jobs. Government should treat everyone fairly and equally under the law.
Minnesota already has equal protection under the law, which I strongly support. However, this proposal goes beyond a traditional Equal Rights Amendment by defining sex to include gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and pregnancy decisions. I do not support putting this broad language into our Constitution when it would likely conflict with sex-based protections for women, including fairness in women’s sports and privacy in women’s spaces. Equal protection must protect everyone.
Minnesota's clean air and water are resources we have a responsibility to protect. I would evaluate energy and environmental policy based on environmental impact, reliability, safety and cost. I support strong environmental standards and responsible development while remaining open to new technologies and all energy sources. We should own our environmental footprint rather than simply shifting it to other countries that have less protections for the environment.
Safe communities require well-trained police who have the staffing, training and tools they need to do their jobs. I support recruiting and retaining good officers, enforcing laws against violent offenders, and truth in sentencing. I also support improving school security and making safety funding available to all schools. Public safety requires both prevention and accountability.
Minnesota already has contribution and spending limits for candidates who accept public subsidies, and public disclosure requirements. I support those transparency requirements. I am cautious about more restrictions on political spending because political speech is protected by the First Amendment. Rules should apply fairly to individuals, businesses, unions and other organizations. Voters should know who funds political messages and decide for themselves how much weight to give them.
