I want all Minnesotans to thrive. The high cost of healthcare, childcare, and housing are making life unaffordable today.
While the millionaires and billionaires are doing better than ever, the rest of us are struggling to get by. This is wrong.
I will fight for making healthcare more affordable and for reducing the cost of prescription drugs. I will fight for affordable child care costs, and I will make sure school breakfast and lunches stay free to help you with your family grocery bill. Young families cannot afford to buy a home and rent is too high. We have a shortage of housing of all types, which is driving up the costs. We need to ensure our housing keeps up with our growth by lifting the stifling zoning regulations and red tape.
Minnesota ranks #5 in the country for business due to our infrastructure, economy, and quality of life. I support the investments we made in infrastructure, job training, broadband access, and our significant child tax credits which grow our economy. We must fund our city infrastructure and police and fire departments. Good infrastructure and low crime rates attract businesses and improve commerce. And we must prioritize great schools and beautiful parks because these attract young families.
One of the top racial disparities we have in Minnesota is home ownership. We must make it easier to buy a home. We have a housing shortage and this drives up cost. Unfortunately, some suburbs have extremely strict zoning codes- requiring every house to have a 3-car garage, brick fronts, and other aesthetic features that aren’t necessary. This makes homes built there unaffordable and you could say this is modern day redlining. We can no longer allow strict codes and red tape prevent development.
Yes, every person in MN deserves equal protection under the law and this should be in our constitution.
We experience the effects of climate change from extreme drought to extreme flooding to air quality alerts from fires in Northern Minnesota and Canada. We made huge leaps forward recently with the 100% bill, but there is still much work to do in heating, heavy industry, and agriculture. We cannot allow the Boundary Waters to be at the whim of whomever is the President or Governor. We must pass permanent protection. Finally, we must replace all lead pipes. Clean air and water are a priority.
As a former City Councilmember, I am on the record in strong support of our police department and we increased funding for the department- hiring 2 new officers & a social worker. Our Anoka-Hennepin schools are struggling right now due to lack of funding. I firmly disagree with the school board’s decision to slash mental health and counseling positions putting our students at risk. We must step up as a state to ensure every school district is adequately funded to keep our kids safe.
In Minnesota we have some of the strictest campaign finance laws in the nation. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United enabled corporations and outside groups to spend unlimited money on elections. Regardless of our strict laws in MN for candidates, big money has a big role in politics today and this is wrong. We must all work together to overturn Citizens United and put the power back where it belongs- the people.
