My three priorities relate to the values of the community I represent. As a returning Senator, I want to continue to fix our broken healthcare system. Too often I hear that affordable healthcare is out of reach and families postpone critical diagnoses while insurance companies continue to see record profits. Second, we need to make sure that families have access to quality childcare, no matter their background, income, or zip code so that we can help parents fully participate in the workforce. Lastly, Minnesota needs to invest in our schools and our students so our future generations are set up for success.
I will continue to protect policies that help people and families make ends meet, including Minnesota Paid Leave, expanding a child tax credit that has cut child poverty by one-third, and universal breakfasts and lunches for school kids. I would like to examine policies that ensure companies and corporations are focusing on their customers, not record-breaking profits, and single-payer healthcare so people can take care of themselves and their families without going into debt.
I will continue to support legislation that addresses systemic racial or ethnic disparities, including funding for culturally specific programs in the healthcare and mental health spaces, and policies that reduce disparities in our school system. I will also support community advocacy, listening to understand, to ensure policies are made in partnership so they are robust, comprehensive, and implementable.
Yes, we are overdue on passing the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This amendment is imperative in removing a barrier for women's equity, and a step towards true equity for all women, girls, and non-binary people in our communities. Women, girls, and non-binary people across my district and across Minnesota contribute to our economy, learning, workforce, and so much more. As a mom of two daughters, I want them to have the same access as others to everything our community has to offer.
As a legislator, I have a strong record of protecting our air and water. Protecting our environment is a top priority in my district, and I am proud to support policies that ensure protections of the BWCA, 100% carbon free electricity by 2040, and banning products containing PFAS. As a scientist, I know we must be thoughtful of environmental, health, and future consequences of policies that expand nuclear power and data centers. We must ensure our environment is protected for future generations.
People in our community deserve to feel safe in their homes and in the community. I am proud to support policies that protect victims of domestic abuse, prevent gun violence, and prevent any outside agency from infringing on our constitutional rights. In my first term, I was proud to support $300 million to local law enforcement agencies to address their public safety concerns. Finally, I authored the bill to make our seniors safer from fraud by banning cryptocurrency kiosks across Minnesota.
Minnesota has the strongest campaign finance laws in the country. I am grateful our laws do not permit direct contributions from corporations, who have no place in our politics. I believe working with our federal partners to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling will further decrease the influence of big money in our elections. Finally, fully funding the Secretary of State, county election services, and the Campaign Finance Board will keep our elections safe, fair, and accessible.
