My top priorities will be lowering costs for families, strengthening northern Minnesota’s economy, and protecting essential services in rural communities. That means property tax relief, affordable health care and childcare, support for northern Minnesota industries and small businesses, and continued investment in rural hospitals, EMS, schools, roads, housing, and workforce development. I will continue working across party lines to deliver practical results for Northern Minnesota.
I support reducing costs that state government can directly influence, including property tax relief, childcare, health care, energy, and transportation. As a State Senator, I was the lead author of expanding Minnesota's property tax refund program by $125 million bringing the average refund for a qualifying Minnesota family to $1,600. I will continue to focus on the places we can make a true difference on Minnesotan's pocket books while supporting our northern Minnesota economy.
I support policies that expand opportunity and ensure Minnesotans have fair access to quality education, housing, health care, employment, and economic opportunity. I also support targeted efforts to address documented disparities while evaluating programs based on measurable results and ensuring state resources reach communities where needs are greatest. This is especially the case for rural communities which face major economic disparities with the 7-county metro, as well as our tribal nations
I support equal protection under the law and believe Minnesotans should be protected from discrimination. Any proposed constitutional amendment should have clear language so voters understand exactly what protections are being added and how courts would interpret them. I would evaluate the final language of an Equal Rights Amendment on that basis before voting to place it on the ballot.
I support strong environmental standards that protect Minnesota’s air, lakes, rivers, forests, and drinking water. I also support a rigorous, science based permitting process that allows projects to move forward only when they can meet or exceed those standards. Environmental protection and responsible economic development should both be guided by science, transparency, and enforceable standards.
I have led the effort to strengthen rural EMS, securing tens of millions of dollars in direct aid and new support for ambulance services facing staffing shortages and rising costs. Safe communities depend on reliable emergency response, especially in rural Minnesota where help can be far away. In addition, I have strongly supported direct police aid to our communities to help ensure rural police departments can maintain coverage in our communities in Northern Minnesota.
I support greater transparency around political spending, stronger disclosure requirements for organizations spending significant amounts to influence elections, and meaningful enforcement of campaign finance laws. Voters should know who is funding political advertisements and independent expenditures, including the major financial interests behind organizations attempting to influence Minnesota elections.
