I taught high school in Detroit, Dearborn and Southfield for a combined total of 38 years. I would like to prioritize STEAM education in Saranac and assist where I can. I believe that teacher input has been reduced in education over the years to allow greater state control and that this has harmed education for students. I believe that teachers and local administrators working together rather than top down mandates from the state and federal government will give us a much better education system.
I do not believe that the budget should be balanced by the teachers giving either losing pay or increasing the class size to unmanageable levels. I believe that the state has a responsibility to fund school districts appropriately.
I believe that student achievement cannot be measured accurately with a couple of mandated written tests. If we wish to improve student outcomes we need to have the students heavily engaged in their learning. The more the student has interest in a topic the harder they work to learn about it. I believe that STEAM learning incorporates many topics using project based learning that can be of high interest to the student. One class I taught gave the students 2 car batteries in the fall and by spring they needed to have a car they could race against other schools at Kettering University. The learning that occurred in this class was tremendous and carried over into traditional classrooms as well
I believe funding is key. Also teacher shortages, and maintaining a consistant quality staff can be difficult for some schools. Proper AI use and the constant distractions from social media also presenting difficult challenges for students to stay focused on their education
