In education, I have spent years reviewing and analyzing the laws around education to better understand the constraints on public schools. In addition, I volunteer in classrooms and buildings to give me a first hand look at what our teachers and students need to be successful.

As an auditor, my job is to audit programs and evaluate their effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with criteria. This background provides me with an analytical approach to reviewing the board decisions.

Personnel management, in my career as supervisor I have learned how to lead teams and support people.

In relation to budgets, I ask the tough questions and use my auditor skills to analyze financial info to help ensure spending is in line with priorities
My top priority is to keep money in the classroom and supporting teachers and students. Our budget at PPS should match what the district’s goals are and meet the needs of community.

Portland is a fiscally conservative community and our PPS board has worked hard to grow our fund balance for the future. This will be helpful as we go into years when our revenue does not meet our needs.

A budget should not be balanced by impacting our student’s learning and our staff need a salary that represents the efforts and skills that they bring to the classroom. I will always fight to bring staff more income and our students what they need.
The board has purchased many new curriculums for our buildings in the last 2-3 years to try and bring new strategies to helping our students be successful.

We have to continue our focus on supporting classroom teachers and intervening early when students are struggling. In the last couple of years, the board has supported a push for more interventionists working on reading and math to help support our students.

Supporting professional development for our staff to ensure they have the skills necessary to meet the ever changing needs of our students is important.

As an auditor, I have advocated for more data driven analytics to better understand where the gaps are so we can better focus our resources.
Locally and nationally one of the most pressing issues is mental health. I am proud to have been a leader in creating the Mental Health Advisory Board for PPS. We have brought together experts to review the districts efforts and policies to help us identify where things should be improved or replaced. Mental health plays a role in absenteeism which leads to lower student achievement.

Also, for PPS budget constraints and flat enrollment plays a large part in challenges to provide all of the resources we need. State funding comes with specific rules for how they want the money used and limits the impact district staff can utilize the money. Every district has different needs and should be allowed to use their funding how needed.

I bring experience in leadership, training, safety, budgeting and accountability. As a Journeyman Lineworker In-Charge, I lead crews, train apprentices and make decisions in an environment where safety and accountability are critical. I also served as a union steward and trustee, giving me experience representing others, resolving issues, making meaningful changes, and overseeing finances. As a small-business and real-estate entrepreneur, I manage budgets, major investments and long-term financial decisions. I also serve on community boards and, most importantly, am a parent invested in our schools.
My priority is making sure taxpayer dollars are used responsibly while protecting the resources that directly support students and teachers. I believe spending should be evaluated based on need, effectiveness and measurable results. We should look for efficiencies before cutting programs that directly affect students. I also believe in transparency so taxpayers understand where their money is going. A balanced budget is important, but so is making sure our financial decisions support the district’s long-term goals and provide students with a quality education. When allocating funds, student and staff safety will always be one of my top priorities.
We need to set high academic expectations and honestly evaluate where our students are succeeding and where we are falling short. Assessment data should be used to identify weaknesses, provide early intervention and determine whether our curriculum and strategies are producing results. We should support our teachers while holding ourselves accountable for measurable improvement. Parents, teachers, administrators and the board need to work together with one clear priority: giving every student the opportunity and support necessary to reach their full potential.
I believe some of the biggest issues facing public schools are student achievement, school safety, bullying, supporting and retaining quality teachers and staff, responsible budgeting, and maintaining trust between schools and families. Schools need to provide a safe environment where students can focus on learning while maintaining high academic expectations. Parents and taxpayers also deserve transparency and accountability. Our decisions should remain focused on preparing students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed after graduation.
