I spent 7 years in school communications at public intermediate school district. I worked on marketing plans, legislation updates, acted as media liaison and much more.
I served an AIGA – West Michigan Treasurer as an initial board member. I kept the budget, set up non-profit status and worked with the IRS and national chapter.
I have owned my own business for marketing and graphic design since 2012. I have experience with both public and private entities.
I have served as an industry advisory board member for high school career and tech education in both Ottawa and Kent counties for a total of 11 years.
I have three children in the district ranging from 5th - 10th grade giving me first hand experience across grades and buildings.
The curriculum should be robust and biased on the best data we have as educators. As a board member this means understanding what is being researched and how to help support instructional staff when things change or need adjusting.
As a public school we need to meet the students where there are, this may mean making sure they have food and other social supports to help them be able to learn to their fullest ability. As a board member I would strive to find new ways to make sure that all scholars are able to come to school with the tools ready to learn.
The most important issue facing public schools is adequate funding to be able to meet all the needs of all students. As a board member it’s important to know how the budget is allocated, what grant programs are available and being able to right size staff and classrooms.
Seconded by being able to attract and keep highly qualified staff. As a board member I would strive to create a culture of integrity where all staff know they are valued, have opportunities for career growth and are able to voice their issues can help attract and retain top talent.
My priority in balancing the budget is to maintain right-sizing district staff and programs to meet student needs, making sure that student opportunities and academics are the highest priority. Asking questions about other areas that can be adjusted or investments that can be made into our schools that will save money later such as infrastructure.
