I am a longtime resident of Rockford. Early in my career, I became interested in local government when I covered the city and various other municipalities as a reporter for various newspapers. This background provides a deep understanding of local governments, how they work and how they can become dysfunctional. I have served on various boards and commissions for the past 25 years, including the Rockford Board of Review, Rockford Planning Commission and Rockford City Council.
The city has been conducting a search for a new water source for several years. Our current well system is adequate but planning for future needs is essential. Working with hydrologists and other professionals, we have explored and continue to explore potential new sources. A significant infrastructure challenge the city will face in the near future is repair and/or rebuilding the bridge on 10 Mile/Division. While this is a county road, terms of the construction contract from more than 50 years ago hold the city responsible for a portion of the cost, which could be significant. We are working with the state and county to address this future challenge.
The City of Rockford is led by a very competent administration and staff. We are very lucky to have such dedicated and smart people serving our community. My goal as a council member is to continue to work closely with our administrators to ensure the city continues to provide exemplary services to residents, maintains strong and dependable infrastructure and wisely looks ahead to plan for the city's future.
I, like many or perhaps most of our neighbors, am opposed to data center construction in this area and elsewhere until we know what we're dealing with. In addition to the immediate concerns over water and energy usage, it is clear that these data centers are meant to power a technology we don't really understand. Industry leaders are currently warning us about potential catastrophic consequences of AI. These technology companies are currently accountable to no one and a regulatory structure for the future industry is nonexistent. We need to ensure that data centers don't destroy our environment and that any advances brought forth by this new technology work to the benefit of all, not just a select few.
