My vision for the Highway Department and our recycling center in the next year is to continue to improve on some of the changes and advances we’ve made in the last couple of years. From a highway standpoint I want to continue to upgrade our roads that are in need of paving and to bring everything into a consistent 20 year cycle. I’m also excited about the possibility of partnering with the county to completely renovate our sidewalk and fence line along our most popular beach on the island, Crescent Beach. As far as the recycling center, we I want to continue to expand on our success with our metal recycling revenue stream, as well as improving and possibly expanding our reuse area, a.k.a. “The Goody pile”
Both areas I will continue to do as much work in house as we possibly can. I have an excellent team that works for me and they have a variety of skill sets that make it possible for us to cut down on the need for outside contractors. I also continue to communicate closely with my counterpart and other townships as to how we can continue to save money in our recycling and our transportation of construction debris and Municipal solid waste.
The work is already taking place. We continue to install catch base systems in roadways that are flood prone from stormwater. I am actively working with the Town engineer to identify to title water, flood planes, and we have begun the process of surveying those areas in preparation for potential road raising. Those projects would require significant funding, but there are funding sources available from both the state and federal level. Our surveying of these areas is the first step. We will use survey data with the addition of forecast data to give us the information needed to set a plan in motion for roadway raising.
