I have over thirty years in the education system as a teacher, instructional coach, and education association president. In 2017-2018 I served as President of the Michigan Reading Association where I led as governance chair and managed a large budget.
Fiscal responsibility is a top concern for any board, but most important in education as it ensures trust in the community and the families it serves. At its core, schools exist when you have teachers and students. Everything else is in support of them. Whenever cuts are necessary, they should be made the furthest away from students. Classrooms must be staffed with high-quality teachers and programming that ensures learning for all students— including our most at-risk students should be our priority.
All teachers must believe that all students are capable of learning at high levels. In order to do this, districts need to use data to make decisions vs. simply reporting results. A focus on literacy is at the heart of achievement. All teachers in the elementary must have training in the science of reading. Secondary teachers must leverage their content knowledge through disciplinary literacy practices.
Cultural wars and political divide have decreased trust in our public schools. Many parents are opting out of our schools and homeschooling. Struggling students and many with mental health issues are opting out for online for-profit diploma factories. We will inevitably have a crisis in education.

I can’t answer this question honestly without sitting in the meeting and really looking at the data.
We need the best teachers if we want the best for our students. We need to look at paying our educators the best if we want to bring in the best.
We need to update our facilities. Our students should not have to be sent home early on hot days because our buildings air conditioning systems can’t keep up.
