Candidate Information
Hi, I'm Kathy Kuipers and I am running for Otsego School Board. I taught science, eighth grade math and eighth grade history at Otsego Middle School for 27 years and am passionate about education. I am the proud mom of two Otsego Public Schools graduates. My daughter followed in my footsteps and is a teacher and my son is a veterinarian. I am a 38 year resident of Otsego Public School system. I graduated from WMU with degrees in education, science, art and masters degree in education.
As a former educator I have many years of experience working in a public school district. My experience includes working on the science curriculm committee, math curriculum committee, community education instructor, middle school teacher, built and ran an OMS after school program and STRIVE curriculum committee. I have also been on the OEA negotiations committee. My degree and experience in education provides me the insight and ability to listen, communicate and collaborate with the community.
Computer based/digital curriculum and screen time is a big concern of mine. Passive use vs active use needs to be monitored, with passive use being limited or abandoned during the school day. Books, paper and pencil are the foundation of literacy and needs to be maintained in the classroom.
Schools are judged on test scores. Otsego has great teachers, but with all the demands placed on them they need help and support in the classroom. I support smaller class sizes so that teachers can more easily provide tailored instruction to meet the individual needs of all students. Our focus is no longer to educate the "masses," but to educate the individual.
School board members need to be approachable and have an active profile in the community. This means attending events and interacting with the community, staff and students. The school board serves the community and it's students. I have been a parent, teacher, staff member and an active part of the Otsego Public Schools community for many years. I am able to listen, communicate and make compromises while serving on the board.
