City Council MemberTogether with the mayor, Council members adopt the city budget, set the property tax rate, pass local laws, and make decisions about city services and policies. Some localities may use the term Alderman/Alderwoman and term lengths are based on the local or city ordinance.
I am in my sixth year of being on the Sunset Valley City Council. I am the liaison to the Public Safety Committee and previously was Vice Chair of the Arts Commission.
Public safety is the bedrock of civic legitimacy. I support our Chief and Police Department in pursuing community policing to build public trust. Fully staffing our force boosts morale and fosters long-term community relationships. To safeguard individual rights, I oppose mass surveillance. Instead, I trust our officers' professional skills and investigative abilities to keep us safe.
In Sunset Valley, our vital infrastructure priorities are streets and water. We are transitioning our robust Street Fund to a condition-based repair model, cutting waste and extending resources. We must also invest the time and proper funding needed to make our water utility self-sustaining, eliminating its reliance on nearly 20% of our general city budget.
Sunset Valley already excels in outreach with active committees, meeting video streaming, Engagement HQ, and open public comment. Building on this foundation, my focus this term is refining digital communication: making it quick and simple to sign up for email notifications and verify subscriptions, ensuring clear, dependable communication between residents and City Council.
BA & MBA from UT; CFP®; institutional investment & budgeting experience; St. David's church investment committee (prior); Hospice Austin investment committee (present); former public school teacher.
Sunset Valley has caring and professional police officers. I would preserve our small-city community policing model by continuing to support visibility and prevention, and use our Public Safety committee to raise resident issues such as keeping streets safe for walkers & bikers. We can also continue to increase resident awareness and coordination for severe weather emergency preparedness.
Sunset Valley is at a critical point where we are reviewing options for the sale or redevelopment of Sunset Valley elementary, and we need to review the land development code. I will advocate for smart land use choices that preserve our unique quality of life, natural space, property value, and ensure that developments on or near city land do not adversely affect our public infrastructure systems.
The city publishes reams of information online. It is too much for most residents to digest. The city should make it easier to understand what council proposing, why it matters, what are the alternatives, and how residents can comment. We should empower neighborhood leaders to set up formal and informal communications from residents to council to increase the breadth of feedback the City receives.
