I grew up in Branch County, Michigan on a farm. I was heavily involved in our 4-H program and was in FFA in middle and high school. I played several sports from a young age through high school. I graduated in 2014 and entered the work force after that. I’ve worked mainly in customer service. I got married in 2021 and we moved in 2022 to Antrim county. I have two children, 8 and 3, one of which is in school. I was on my 4-H clubs board and was on the Alba School board for a short period last year. I am running for this position so I know more of what’s going on in our school system. I am my children’s advocate and want to know as much as I can about what is happening and needs to not be happening(if any).
I would like our kids to learn more than what I did in school. Our kids need to learn how to cook, grow their own food, build with their hands, sew, hunters safety, etc. I would like to try and bring back certain classes if funding is available. Wood shop, home economics, get the kids involved in a community garden of some sort to help the local food pantry or even for their own cooking class.
Mental health is a big issue right now. We need to encourage parents and teachers to sit down and ask how our kids are doing. It’s not just about how well our kids grades are, that’s only part of it. Our kids need to know that everyone has off days and that’s okay. School can be stressful, like a job, and our kids need to know and be taught how to handle stressful situations. Find out what helps our kids unwind when things seem to hard or stressful. Maybe have a class that helps kids learn how to deal with stress and mental health.
I am not a fan of AI as it’s taking away from our natural resources. Kids attention span, even some adults, has gone down with all the technology already. We need to learn by actually researching and obtaining how we got the answer vs. the answer being given to us. Yes it’s very convenient to have questions answered in seconds, but our kids also need to learn by asking questions to people. Sometimes your elders have more wisdom and tricks than what AI knows. There are so many books out there that are waiting to be read to teach our kids everything.
Have more career days and field trips. Bring in your local construction owner, lawn care company, plumber, farmers, etc. take kids out and show them what they can do. Have college days where career professionals come in and explain how to get to where they are, what schooling is required, and what the job is really like. Let them get a real feel of what’s ahead so they can have an easier decision in what they want to do.
