We have a rare opportunity to vote away our right to direct democracy with Amendment 4. It forever obstructs any efforts to amend Missouri's constitution unless they are conceived by the General Assembly. These lawmakers demand our complete trust to shape our constitution after we abolish our only workaround. Who do you want in that room when it's time for more tinkering?
Amendment 5 restores what we stripped the General Assembly of 46 years ago: its power to overtax without our consent. Lawmakers could erase income tax just like they wiped out capital gains tax last year, but they need our approval of Amendment 5 to abolish our guaranteed protection against tax increases. As your representative, I will fight every new tax they dream up.
