John Braun is a small business owner, former U.S. Navy Captain, and Minority Leader of the Washington State Senate, representing the 20th Legislative District. An engineering graduate of the University of Washington and holder of an MBA and M.S. from the University of Michigan, Braun also serves as President of Braun Northwest, a family-owned emergency vehicle manufacturer. In the State Senate, he has led major education funding and tax reform efforts, including the College Affordability Program, while advocating for affordability, public safety, strong schools, lower taxes, and economic opportunity. He and his wife, Marlo, have been married for 38 years and live on their family farm near Centralia. They have four adult children.
Everyday goods are too expensive, straining households and small business. I've spent my career on both sides of this problem. As president of a Chehalis manufacturing company with 350 employees, I see what housing, health care, and groceries cost working families. As the Legislature's lead budget writer, I've worked to reduce those costs. Congress can help by ending deficit spending and cutting regulations so it is easier to build homes and businesses. On health care, I support price transparency, expanded health savings accounts, and protecting the rural hospitals and clinics Southwest Washington depends on. I have a record on affordability: I sponsored the nation's largest cut in public college tuition. I'll bring that same focus on measurable savings for real households to Congress.
Our democratic institutions are strong and enduring. I spent 31 years in the Navy defending the Constitution, and I take that oath seriously. Congress protects our institutions first by doing its own job: passing budgets on time, debating in the open, and acting as an equal branch of government. I also support banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks. On elections, Washington should cooperate with federal efforts to ensure ballot integrity. Our vote by mail system must be secure and accurate. Every American citizen should be able to vote and trust the count, and threats against election workers or voters are unacceptable, no matter who makes them. I've worked across the aisle and treated opponents as fellow citizens, not enemies. I'll carry that standard to Congress.
I'm an engineer, so I treat this as a design problem, not a conflict. A government that takes a decade to approve a clean energy project is not protecting the environment. It takes action, not endless planning. Southwest Washington proves it: we generate clean hydropower, mill timber sustainably, and support salmon runs and working ports on the same river. I back all of the above energy, preserving hydropower and adding nuclear, natural gas, and renewables, because affordable, reliable power is an economic and environmental asset. I support active forest management to reduce catastrophic wildfire and keep mills running, and salmon recovery that works: hatcheries, culverts, habitat, and sea lion control, with the Columbia managed for power, navigation, and salmon together.
The Biden Administration left our southern border open for years and moved to close it only at the end of its term. The new Administration secured the border and illegal crossings plummeted. The harder problem now is enforcement. I entered this race focused on the fentanyl crisis, which has reached every county in this district, so I will prioritize barriers, more agents, detection technology, and dismantling cartel supply chains. Enforcement must follow due process; we are a nation of laws, and government must follow its own legal standards too. Congress should expand legal pathways for the temporary workers our farms, mills, and businesses need. Secure the border, enforce the law fairly, and welcome those who come legally. That is the balance most Americans want.
Affordability. In every county of this district, Clark, Cowlitz, Lewis, Pacific, Skamania, Thurston and Wahkiakum, families pay more for housing, energy, groceries, child care, and insurance than their paychecks can absorb. In Olympia I cut college tuition, lowered taxes, and am fighting the unconstitutional new income tax. The federal government should stop making it worse and make it easier to build: restrain deficit spending that fuels inflation, reform permitting to add housing and energy supply, protect Northwest hydropower, and deliver the Interstate Bridge replacement on time and on budget, not as an endless megaproject. I've made payroll here for decades, and I'll bring a manufacturer's discipline to federal spending, because honest budgets and affordable energy mean an affordable.

I was born in Portland, Oregon, the second child in a multigenerational Pacific Northwest family. My loving wife, Amber, and I have been married since January 2009. We are the proud parents of four wonderful children, Briana, Addison, Braydon, and Brynlee. Tragically, our beloved daughter Addison was born and passed away on the same day in 2012. My career began in movie theaters, where I made popcorn at 16, and I worked my way up to project manager. In this role, I traveled across Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, experiencing diverse healthcare and public transportation systems. These experiences are a major reason I am running and have shaped my political beliefs.
I would support the bipartisan housing bill that Trump has refused to sign. This housing bill must be passed to make any progress on the housing crisis. But not only that, we must also take further measures to keep out private equity.
In healthcare, I would advocate expanding Medicare and Medicaid to cover more people. We need to begin offering an affordable option. But most importantly, we also need to go after these insurance companies that are gouging every cent they can from every transaction. We need to be providing healthcare, not barriers to it.
Additionally, we need to put a stop to this disastrous war in Iran. All this war has done is send prices skyrocketing. Inflation is already eroding people's paychecks, and this administration has only made it worse.
Congress needs to grab back its power and uphold the laws of this nation. Our democratic institutions and voting rights must be protected. And this needs to be done to ensure the public remains confident in elections. No matter what party you are from or who is the sitting president, it is imperative that these institutions and values are protected.
I would like to see the John Lewis Voting Rights Act passed. This act would ensure equal access to the ballot and ban discriminatory practices. We need to make sure that our voting systems are available and secure, and we can accomplish this without sacrificing accessibility for potential voters. Political engagement is vital and must be encouraged. Voting and the power of elections must remain with the states.
It is very clear to me that we need to change how we approach energy. Especially now, with the war in Iran, the United States needs to diversify how we get energy. And in doing so, I believe this will help with economic growth and environmental protection. As we pursue wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, this will help prop up different areas of the economy and create jobs. Additionally, it will help safeguard our energy sources.
I want to make sure that my kids and future generations have not only a planet to live on but a planet that is just as beautiful, if not more so, for them to experience. I do not want to see plumes of black smoke and be unable to see the blue of the sky.
We cannot continue our current course. We are investing billions of our tax dollars into ICE as they terrorize our streets and communities. Not only could we be investing that money into our schools, healthcare, or roads, but we could also be investing that money into immigration courts. We have had a back log of cases for so long that it can now take decades to be processed.
And ICE is simply preying on these vulnerable people. They wait outside court houses to pounce on unsuspecting individuals who are only trying to go about things the right way. Instead of detaining these people, we can work on fixing the system. And in that vein, we must dismantle ICE. It is clear that the lack of training and requirements has set this agency down an irreversible path.
This district needs improvements to its infrastructure. The I-5 bridge needs to be replaced, and that construction needs to start as soon as possible. Every day we wait, the cost continues to rise and adds millions of dollars to the final total. What we need from Congress is funding.
Not only that, but we also need to improve our roads, rural healthcare facilities, the expansion of broadband internet, and improvements to our flood mitigation systems. Not only will Congress need to help financially, but we must also make sure that what we pay for gets done. Too often, contracts are awarded to companies for this work, and no improvements are made. It's time we saw our tax dollars put to work to benefit us.

I grew up in Southern California and became a pilot. My employment lead me around to many places to live. Then I became an international cargo pilot, flying around the world almost every month. In college I earned a BS in Business Administration from CSULA, then I earned a MBA from the same institution. I raised three daughters and now am divorced.
I am not going into specifics without deliberative reasoning and study. I do support a strong business environment to make this district prosperous. I would be careful about taxing too much, nor too little. I would question if it is wise to limit growth in the Third District for quality of life for our people.
A strong role in preserving American values.

Congress should support legal and reasonable immigration to America.
It looks like the leftist state government has gone very far in making Washington a "socialistic paradise". They have run rampant with taxation and burden on the people of this state.

Troy Rasband earned a high school diploma from Omak High School and an associate degree from Clark College in 2021. His career experience includes working in information technology. Former member of Indivisible Greater Vancouver as their Tech Team lead and sat on the leadership committee. Active member of the Democratic Socialists of America, under the Vancouver, WA branch.
Complicated problems require comprehensive solutions. My platform includes the following to address these issues:
1. Medicare for All. Close the gaps for existing members, then expand in a 2-4 rollout system, similar in style to Elizabeth Warren's plan.
2. Allocate the funds back into the SNAP program, on top of increasing program funding.
3. Through a Green New Deal policy architecture, I would push for grants that produce affordable housing in a responsible manner with respect to our environment here in the Pacific Northwest.
Congress should be at the forefront of protecting our democratic institutions and ensuring everyone has equal voting rights.
We can start by codifying the VRA bill into law and holding individuals in these institutions accountable for their actions.
The Green New Deal is the perfect policy architecture to start reviving our middle class, while transitioning off of fossil fuels.
We first begin by acknowledging the wrongs we've inflicted upon our immigrant communities, then taking action by investigating any federal agent suspected of violating immigrant and non-immigrant rights alike.
Additionally, we need to expand the immigration court to include more judicial and administrative staff to cut down on processing times for individuals going through the legal process of entering the country.
In that vein, we also need to have mandated audits into these facilities to ensure safe and humane living conditions, members of Congress shouldn't be turned away by a federal agent.
One of the many things I heard from both rural and urban counties in our district, is job security. People want to know that there's a plan to keep jobs in their local communities not only for them, but for their children and grandchildren.
My belief is that the Green New Deal perfectly addresses the issues we have in our district and the Pacific Northwest as a whole.
