Devin Hermanson is a progressive activist, filmmaker, and nonprofit consultant with a lifetime of success bringing people together to get hard things done. He is a proven leader who helped take a startup public, created nonprofit programs that empowered millions living in poverty around the world, and locally founded a group that has mobilized thousands in the fight for economic and social justice. Devin has appeared on programs such as Good Morning America and ABC News, been interviewed by over 100 other outlets, is a frequent speaker at events, and has led gender equity discussions with organizations such as Microsoft. Devin is a graduate of Boston University's MBA Program with an emphasis in Public and Nonprofit Management.
We need a top-to-bottom rethinking of how we approach "affordability," shifting total economic power to the working class.
The wealthiest have seen their effective tax rate cut in half over recent decades. We need to reverse that so we can invest in Medicare for All, housing programs, free education, debt relief, and daycare.
Strengthen unions, tax corporations holding excessive housing stock, assist first-time home buyers, expand WIC and SNAP, and break up monopolies.
Finally, pilot a federal guaranteed basic income program to assist a whole segment of our society BEFORE they fall into homelessness.
This is the key issue of this election. Our democracy is under assault, and too few in Congress are recognizing it as the crisis it is.
We need an urgent, strategic response to eliminate gerrymandering, get money out of our elections, restore the Voting Rights Act protections, allow DC and Puerto Rico to become states, and expand and reform the Supreme Court.
Nothing else will get done unless we turn back the MAGA attack on every pillar of our democracy. That includes breaking up the corrupt deals by Trump allies to buy up major news outlets like CBS, and confronting the hate as a business model of Fox News and others, with innovative legislation that speeds defamation suit appeals and allows for punitive damages in cases with a strong public interest component.
We can have strong economic growth and provide clean energy and environmental protection. The urgency of the Green New Deal is essential if we are to preserve our planet and will create good-paying new jobs, while preserving the ecological gems of the 2nd district that are key to our food supply, tourism, and local economy.
We can have a humane, common-sense approach to immigration and border security that meets our workforce needs by abolishing ICE ( and prosecuting crimes they’ve committed), expanding legal pathways to citizenship, and funding a vastly more efficient processing process. We will take care of Dreamers at long last.
This all needs to be paired with an effective partnership with key countries to provide humanitarian assistance before waves of refugees make the dangerous voyage to our borders.
Affordability is on everyone's mind, and that is intrinsically linked to our eroding democracy. Our gas costs more because of Trump's illegal war, and everything else costs more because of his illegal tariffs.
Congress has completely failed to fulfill their consitutionally mandated role, allowing this lawless administration to quash investigations, fire our watchdogs, and harass anyone who dares to stand up to them with frivolous investigations.
We may be running out of time to secure our democracy, and we need an urgent, strategic response to do so, as I outlined above.
The fentanyl crisis, housing, healthcare, and homelessness crisis all demand attention, and the federal government can only address those issues if our democracy serves the people, not billionaires and autocrats.

My family has called Northwest Washington home for more than 100 years. My great-grandparents settled in the Deming area in the late 1800s, and since then, my family has shared the experiences and concerns of many in our region. I was born and raised in Northwest Washington, attended public schools in Arlington, and worked my way through college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. As the son of a union power line worker and a mom who managed the books while raising eight kids, I learned early in life the value of a dollar and the importance of hard work. To lower housing costs, I support expanding federal rental assistance, building more affordable homes, helping first-time homebuyers and passing the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to preserve rural housing and increase housing supply. To lower health care costs, I support lowering prescription drug prices, extending Affordable Care Act tax credits to lower premiums, reversing Medicaid cuts and protecting Medicare. To lower the cost of groceries, gas and other necessities, I am working to end price gouging and President Trump’s tariffs and unjust foreign wars. President Trump promised lower prices and no war, and he has given us higher prices and more war. I will continue to deliver large federal investments to Northwest Washington that create jobs and lower costs.
Congress should protect voting rights, election workers, the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power. As a co-founder of the Voting Rights Caucus, I support federal voting-rights legislation that protects the Voting Rights Act, access to mail-in and early voting, protections against voter intimidation and accountability for efforts to overturn lawful election results. Washington has a secure vote-by-mail system with signature verification, ballot tracking and audits. Congress should give states and local election officials the funding they need to run secure elections and block any action by the Trump Administration that prevents ballots from being counted or undermines faith in our elections.
Congress should focus on creating jobs in clean energy, something Northwest Washington has excelled at through investments in advanced manufacturing, clean fuels, and sustainable energy sources. I support federal investments that lower energy costs, strengthen ports, ferries, roads, bridges and energy transmission, and help workers train for good-paying jobs. Congress must speed up responsible permitting without eliminating environmental review or public input. Economic growth should not come at the expense of clean air, clean water, salmon recovery or public lands. Congress should build on the investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to create more jobs, reliable energy, lower costs and a cleaner environment with less pollution and fewer greenhouse gases.
The current immigration system is broken. Congress needs to pass bipartisan reform that strengthens border security, improves the legal immigration system, protects due process and provides legal pathways for Dreamers and others who are contributing to their communities. I support effective border investments to stop fentanyl trafficking and policies that protect refugees and asylum seekers. The Trump Administration’s immigration policies have brutalized communities in Northwest Washington. Congress should enforce requirements for humane conditions in immigration facilities, which I have visited to conduct firsthand oversight. Congress should require ICE to follow the same rules as every other federal, state and local law enforcement agency.
The most important issue in Northwest Washington is affordability. Housing, health care, groceries, child care, transportation and energy cost too much for too many families. Hardworking people should be able to house, feed and care for their families and the federal government should pursue policies that help make that possible. I support building more housing, protecting Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, lowering prescription drug costs, strengthening food assistance, investing in early childhood education and reforming the VA to help veterans get a job, buy a house, and get the care they deserve. I will also contribute to making life more affordable by bringing federal dollars home to Northwest Washington for projects that provide relief for family budgets.
