I grew up in a middle class family, raised by a carpenter and a school lunch lady, who taught their kids the importance of hard work to get ahead. I was the first person in my family to graduate from college and I helped start a small family business. When the housing market collapsed, our business was forced to close its doors. That is why I am so committed to making sure other small businesses have the resources and support to succeed. As a city councilmember and state lawmaker, I have been a consistent, determined voice for middle class families just like the one I grew up in. As chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, I am tasked with writing the transportation budget for the State of Washington. My top budget priorities are always providing the state with the best transportation options and infrastructure available.
The state has worked hard to expand revenue options in the past few years, and while we wait for the funds to come from these new avenues we are going to need to find ways to reduce spending. We will need to look at reductions throughout programs, however we should include the public in these conversations and discussions on how we can best use the state's funds.
Reductions should be done in ways that least disrupt services and continue to provide the most broad access to residents.
We must continue working to protect our democracy and ensure that our elections remain fair, secure, and trusted. Washington State has built a strong election system that prioritizes ballot security, transparency, and accuracy, and I have full confidence in the dedication and professionalism of our election officials.
We should also continue removing barriers to participation and expanding access to the ballot box. This means exploring new opportunities to increase voter registration, strengthen voter outreach, and ensure communities have convenient access to
resources like ballot drop boxes. A healthy democracy depends on every eligible voter having the opportunity to make their voice heard.
We also must take action to address the distressing decline in local journalism across our state.
Our state should continue to invest in law enforcement by providing officers with the resources, training, and support they need to effectively serve our communities and build sustainable careers. At the same time, we must recognize that public safety requires more than enforcement alone.
We should ensure that mental health services, rehabilitation programs, and support systems are adequately funded and available for nonviolent offenders to help address the root causes of challenges and reduce repeat offenses. We must also invest in trained mental health professionals who can respond to behavioral health crises when law enforcement is not the appropriate or most effective response. Our state should support a strong, independent press and ensure that the First Amendment rights of local journalists are protected. A healthy democracy depends on access to reliable information and trustworthy news that is available to all who seek it. Journalists should be able to report the facts, ask difficult questions, and share perspectives without fear of retaliation, censorship, or losing opportunities because of their work. Protecting a free and independent press is essential to keeping our communities informed and our democracy strong. I believe that the state should tax the large social media platforms that benefit from the content that our local news sites create, without fully compensating them. These taxes should fund grants that support access to local journalism.
I believe that our state's redistricting process is an excellent example of a non-partisan and fair redistricting method.
The greatest challenge facing LD 21 is affordability and the rising cost of living. People are working harder than ever, yet many are receiving less stability and security in return. Too many families are being forced to make impossible choices between healthcare, housing, and the everyday necessities they rely on.
The state government has a responsibility to create opportunity and provide resources that help families thrive. We must find meaningful ways to deliver relief to those struggling, expand access to essential services, and ensure that every family has a fair opportunity to build a stable future. Our communities deserve policies that make it possible not just to get by, but to succeed.
