I was appointed to this position last June after the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a good friend and mentor of mine, State Senator Bill Ramos. His passion for progress and the unstoppable drive he had for the people of our district was inspiring to me as I was starting my own journey in public service. Before joining the state legislature, I served for six years on the Issaquah City Council, leading efforts to expand funding for affordable housing, crisis response, climate action, and transportation infrastructure. I was proud to support the millionaires tax, a new progressive revenue tool that will help us make investments in our state's biggest budget priorities such as future investments in education, healthcare, early learning and childcare, tax relief for working families and small businesses, and more. Our tax code just got slightly more fair, but it’s still on the whole regressive and unfair.
I’m committed to advancing a tax system that is fair, resilient, and addresses the needs of working families while protecting the essential services they rely on, such as childcare, access to healthcare, and education. Washington already does a lot right on election security and voter confidence. Voters can track their ballot online from mailing to counting, ensuring their vote is recorded and their voice heard. We’ve also made voting highly accessible with universal vote‑by‑mail, same‑day registration, and widespread drop boxes. This session, we strengthened protections against voter suppression and expanded voting rights with HB 1710 and HB 1750, both of which I proudly supported. I also back continued investments in election security, transparency, civic education, and equal access to voting resources across every community.
Safe communities need comprehensive supports. To me, that means ensuring we meet our duty as legislatures to fund public defense, helping local fire departments acquire affordable apparatus, supporting cities that stand up alternatives, such as community courts, and investing in behavioral health and substance use interventions that meet people where they are when they need them, like co-response and referral-based programs. It also means ensuring our investments in local police and corrections are tied to standards that drive equitable community outcomes.
I believe Washington state has a role to play, but it has to be done carefully so the government can never influence editorial content. This support can be done by granting tax credits for local newsrooms, protecting strong public records access so journalists can do their jobs and have access to governmental records for accurate reporting, and defending shield laws and anti-SLAPP suit protections that let reporters do their work without fear of retaliation from companies or individuals. A healthy democracy’s foundation depends on people having reliable local information about their government so they are informed about the policy decisions being made.
I'm proud of Washington's nonpartisan redistricting process. Handing the drawing of districts to an independent commission, rather than legislators drawing their own districts and picking their voters, is simply the right decision for any democracy, and it's one of the reasons our state's maps are competitive and fair compared to many others across the country.
At this point, I haven't seen anything that convinces me the process needs to change ahead of 2031. Especially with this redistricting battle that has been playing out nationally, we here in Washington are protected from any person attempting to influence how we draw our maps. Washington’s maps are drawn to best represent our state and its diversity and not the interest of one political party over the other.
There are many challenges facing the 5th LD, ranging from affordability, to housing costs and everyday essentials like groceries, childcare, and reproductive care. Transportation is also a major need throughout the district, especially the ongoing need to improve SR-18, which remains critical to our region's safety and economy.
Affordability is top of mind for families in my district. Our housing crisis is still as urgent as ever, and access to affordable childcare and healthcare is still out of reach for too many. Coupled with rising energy costs families are left stretching every dollar. I'm focused on tackling the affordability challenges facing so many families across our district so they can afford to stay in the communities they call home.
