Alex Andrade is a Burien City Councilmember in Washington, a small business owner, and a community advocate. She was elected to City Council in 2023. In 2010, Alex founded Citlali Creativo, a Burien-based design, print, and creative services business. Through this work, she has supported local businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations throughout South King County. Alex’s community involvement includes serving on boards such as SOMOS Seattle, volunteering with a local animal shelter and nonprofits, and serving on a variety of regional committees through City Council. Her work focuses on civic engagement, small businesses, community partnerships, collaboration, and practical solutions designed to deliver measurable results.
My top budget priorities are protecting essential services that directly impact people’s quality of life, including public safety, education, infrastructure, housing, and behavioral health services.
I believe budgets should reflect both our values and our responsibility to the people we serve. Before asking taxpayers for additional revenue, government should evaluate whether existing programs are producing measurable results, identify inefficiencies, and ensure funding is reaching the communities and services it was intended to support.
If reductions became necessary, I would take a thoughtful, data-driven approach that looks at outcomes, duplication of services, and long-term impacts rather than making across-the-board cuts. Responsible budgeting means making difficult decisions while protecting core services and focusing resources where they make the greatest difference.
Sea-Tac Airport is an important economic driver for our region, but the communities surrounding the airport should have a meaningful voice as growth continues. Expansion must include thoughtful planning and mitigation that addresses impacts on residents, including noise, environmental concerns, transportation, infrastructure, and quality of life.
Through my role on the Burien City Council and as a member of the Highline Forum, I have worked alongside the Port of Seattle, neighboring cities, and community partners on regional issues connected to airport operations and growth. We have supported and raised concerns on proposals when necessary, recognizing that regional decisions have local impacts.
As discussions about long-term aviation capacity continue, we cannot ignore the pressures placed on communities surrounding Sea-Tac. Any solution must include collaboration between the state, the Port, cities, and communities to balance economic growth with accountability and mitigation.
Public confidence in elections is essential to a healthy democracy. Washington should continue protecting access to voting while also strengthening transparency, communication, and public understanding of how elections are administered.
Many concerns come from people not knowing what safeguards already exist, so expanding voter education around ballot processing, verification, audits, and election security can help build trust. When questions arise, government should respond with clear information rather than dismiss concerns.
We should also continue improving civic participation by reducing barriers to engagement, supporting accurate information, and encouraging more people to participate in local government. A strong democracy requires both secure elections and public confidence in the process.
Every person deserves to feel safe in their home, neighborhood, and community. Improving public safety requires a balanced approach that includes prevention, accountability, and ensuring communities have the resources needed to respond effectively.
At the state level, we need to support law enforcement recruitment and retention, expand co-response and behavioral health resources, and address issues that contribute to crime, including addiction, untreated mental health challenges, and lack of stability. We must also ensure victims and impacted communities are part of the conversation.
As a city councilmember, I have seen how state policies directly impact local governments and their ability to provide services. Effective public safety policy should focus on collaboration, implementation, and whether policies are producing the outcomes they were intended to achieve.
Good policy starts with the goal of helping people, but it must also deliver real results for the communities we serve.
Local journalism plays an important role in keeping communities informed and ensuring accountability in government. Public trust grows when people have access to accurate information and understand how decisions are being made.
Washington should continue supporting transparency, open government, and access to public information while preserving the independence of a free press. Residents should be able to follow the work of their government, understand the decisions being considered, and have opportunities to participate in the process.
A strong democracy requires both an informed public and a government committed to openness, accountability, and trust.
One of the greatest challenges facing the 33rd Legislative District is maintaining quality of life as families, workers, and small businesses face increasing pressures from affordability, public safety concerns, housing challenges, and access to critical services.
These issues are connected and require thoughtful solutions that address root causes while also responding to the immediate needs communities are experiencing. State government plays an important role in providing resources, removing barriers, and creating policies that allow local communities to be successful.
As a city councilmember, I have seen how decisions made at the state level directly impact cities and the people we serve. Good policy cannot end when a bill passes. We need collaboration between state and local governments, accountability in implementation, and a focus on whether policies are delivering meaningful results for our communities.
