In Olympia, Kevin will fight to overhaul Washington’s broken K-12 education funding model to relieve the tax burden on rural homeowners, expand investments in labor-led heavy civil infrastructure under Project Labor Agreements, and dismantle healthcare deserts by treating care as a fundamental human right. He is dedicated to building a future focused on economic survival, worker dignity, and material results for the 19th District.
My top budget priorities are fully funding rural K-12 education, investing in critical heavy-civil infrastructure like local flood protection, and expanding rural healthcare access. For revenue, Washington must stop relying on regressive sales and property taxes that squeeze working families; instead, we need a progressive tax structure targeting out-of-state corporate monopolies and institutional speculators. If reductions are necessary, I would find savings by eliminating wasteful corporate tax exemptions and ending the costly outsourcing of public services to private firms.
We strengthen confidence by keeping corporate dark money out of our democratic processes. I support strict disclosure laws for political advertisements, keeping election systems completely secure, and fully funding our robust mail-in voting infrastructure. To expand civic participation, the state must mandate comprehensive multi-lingual constituent outreach, fully fund civics education in our public schools, and protect the right of every working-class neighbor to have their voice easily heard at the ballot box without systemic barriers.
True public safety requires a comprehensive approach addressing the root causes of instability. We must support first responders with competitive funding, robust staffing, and mental health resources to keep communities secure. Simultaneously, we must make aggressive state investments in behavioral healthcare, substance use treatment pipelines, and affordable housing. When we solve the underlying crises of poverty and untreated addiction while expanding family-wage union jobs, we structurally reduce crime and build safer neighborhoods.
Independent local journalism is a vital pillar of democracy, especially in rural areas like Southwest Washington where local reporting has been hollowed out by corporate hedge funds. The state can play a role by implementing targeted tax incentives for independent, locally-owned newsrooms that employ area journalists. We must ensure our rural communities maintain transparent access to reliable, verified information without letting out-of-state media conglomerates monopolize or silence small-town reporting.
I support transforming the redistricting commission into a fully independent, non-partisan citizen body that excludes active politicians, political consultants, and major party donors. The process must prioritize absolute transparency, mandate accessible public comment periods in multiple languages, and ensure that legislative districts respect logical geographic boundaries and historical communities of interest. We must prevent partisan gerrymandering and guarantee districts are drawn to serve voters, not protect career politicians.
The greatest challenge facing the 19th District is the erosion of rural economic stability and vital public services, which has left us with severe healthcare deserts and chronically underfunded schools. State government must step up by completely overhauling the K-12 funding model to relieve the tax burden on rural homeowners. We must also block corporate monopolies from shuttering local medical clinics and invest heavily in coastal civil infrastructure under Project Labor Agreements to create family-wage union jobs here.
