The Missoula County Sheriff is an elected official acting as the chief law enforcement officer and coroner for the 2,618-square-mile county. They oversee patrol, investigations, and jail operations, while also directing investigations into unattended, suspicious, or unexpected deaths. The role demands high-level leadership and adherence to Montana state law. Key Responsibilities - Law Enforcement (Sheriff): Public Safety, Investigative Work, Court Duties, Administration. Key Responsibilities - Coroner (Coroner):Death Investigation, Inquests, Notification, Official Duties (orders autopsies, issues death certificates, presides over Coroner's Inquests)Qualifications and Requirements: Must be a US citizen, at least 18 years old, and a high school graduate, no felony convictions, must be able to pass a physical examination, including excellent vision and hearing. Requires the ability to deal with, and manage, scenes involving death, trauma, and mental distress.Salary Information (2026) $105,726.40The salary is established by the Missoula County Compensation Board and is consistent with other primary elected department heads.
