Lyon County School Board Trustee, District 2
County School District Trustees serve on the elected board that governs the fifth-largest school district in the United States. Trustees set district policy, approve the multi-billion-dollar budget, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and provide oversight of curriculum implementation, student services, and district operations. In recent years, school board races nationwide have drawn increased attention as communities debate issues such as curriculum standards, parental involvement, student safety, library materials, teacher support, and how schools address diversity and inclusion. Because trustees influence how these policies are implemented locally — and how schools balance educational quality, transparency, and community values — these races play a significant role in shaping the direction of public education and maintaining trust between families and the district.

Lyon County School District has almost completed single point of entry in all schools. LCSD currently has a resource sheriff officer in each of the 5 attendance areas. All schools have campus security surveillance cameras. I support all of these safety measures, however, I believe that cameras could be added to all classrooms, which would capture incidents of unsafe or disruptive behavior for administrators, teachers, and students alike.
In Nevada, the Superintendent of Public Instruction approves or disapproves books for use in public school libraries which is reviewed by the State Board of Education. Books that could influence children in ways not aligned with truth, morality, or the American way of life are not selected. Books selected for use in curricula involves input school staff, parents, and community members ensuring that they align with educational goals and standards. I believe school boards need to follow this process when making decisions when including or removing books from school curricula or libraries.
All school employees' pay and benefits are negotiated between the School Board of Trustees and administrative, certified, and classified labor groups (unions). In Lyon County, negotiations typically happen biannually and generally speaking, most negotiations included staff salary raises for all labor groups in a fair manner ensuring one group does not get a higher percentage raise over the others. Staff benefit reviews happen annually so labor groups can acquire the best bargain for benefits. School board members are actively involved in both of these processes and I support these processes.
