I am running for the School Board because I believe that a strong public school system is the heartbeat of a thriving community. When our schools succeed, our entire community grows stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the future.
Our children and their educators are incredible. They are the reason I am stepping up. I have the experience to bridge the gap between policy and practice, and the passion to ensure every student in our district has the opportunity to thrive.
Declining student enrollment, reduced budgets with inflationary cost increases, and citizens' concerns over tax increases.
These issues are interrelated because lower student enrollment has led to the district receiving less money to educate students, even as many of its costs have not decreased. The district contracted with a firm to begin a demographic forecasting study, which will lead to staffing and boundary recommendations. This will guide big decisions moving forward. This study should provide recommendations to move forward in a more fiscally responsible way. I can contribute my experience and input to these decisions.
I have capacity in four critical areas:
Parent - I raised five incredible children and helped them navigate our public school system. They were all prepared for their college experiences. I attended Weber High, as did my children, and I am familiar with our community's values.
Educator - I know the joys and challenges of the classroom. I have had the privilege of teaching children at every age from Kindergarten through Adult Education.
School Counselor - I believe in the "whole child". I understand that social, emotional, and mental health support is necessary for students to be ready to learn.
Principal - I have managed budgets, led staff, and navigated the complex regulatory and administrative landscape of a school building.
Weber School District's Policy 8200 outlines the district's commitment to providing a wide array of instructional materials to students through its libraries and media centers. The collections shall comply with state and federal laws and will not contain sensitive materials. Media Center specialists, subject to the principal's oversight and input from school staff and parents, are responsible for developing balanced collections at their schools. This would mean representing multiple perspectives aligned with students' developmental levels.
The Board's strategic plan, Elevate 28, is being implemented by the Superintendent, with school and district leaders addressing this issue. Beginning in 2025, each school must develop a school success plan with goals for literacy and numeracy. These include strategies, performance measures, and milestones with accountability for school leaders and educators. This was very effective in my school, and our students had commendable growth. This alignment within the district was desperately needed, and these gains will be more apparent in the coming years.
I will have a Facebook page that summarizes each Board Meeting and post on it monthly. Patrons who would prefer to receive this information by email can sign up for it.
