I’m running for the Weber County School Board because I believe every student in our community deserves a safe, challenging, and supportive learning environment, and I want to help ensure our schools stay focused on what matters most: students, families, and great teaching.
The top three issues facing Weber County schools right now are rising construction costs, declining enrollment (and resulting funding pressure), and taxation/funding tensions. Below is a clear breakdown of each issue, including its impact and what I would do.
1. Rising construction costs: $60M cost increase, which puts pressure on the capital budget. Encourage more transparency, phased builds, and competitive bidding.
2. Declining enrollment: $3.8M funding loss, which creates staffing/pay constraints. Recommend retention programs, demographic planning, and compensation clarity
Taxation pressures: Proposed 5.64% increase causing community confusion. Use clear communication, outcome-based budgeting, and citizen oversight
I bring 38 years of experience as an educator, including 33 years serving in WSD. My entire professional life has been shaped by a commitment to students, teachers, and families in this community.
In addition to my school-based experience, I have a long record of service on school community councils. I served 6 years on Sandridge Jr. High’s Community Council as a parent representative and 8 years on South Ogden Jr. High’s Community Council as a teacher representative. These roles gave me firsthand experience with school improvement planning, budgeting priorities, and the collaborative work required to support student success.
WSD is my home. I graduated from this WSD, my children graduated from WSD, and grandchildren attend schools in WSD.
The best approach is a transparent, professionally grounded, regularly updated selection policy that supports intellectual freedom, curriculum needs, and student diversity. This protects both students’ access to information and the district from arbitrary or politically motivated decisions.
Weber School District should focus on evidence-based literacy and math instruction, targeted intervention for struggling students, and system level changes that improve consistency, teacher support, and program effectiveness. The district’s own data shows both achievement gaps and areas of strength (like strong growth among the lowest performing students), which means improvement is possible with the right strategy.
I will use regular, transparent communication through Facebook to keep the public informed about my decisions and votes.
