Ballot Designation
Deputy Public Defender, County of Los Angeles
Candidate's Political Party
Democrat
Binh Dang is an attorney and Deputy Public Defender with nearly 20 years of courtroom litigation experience, including more than 100 jury trials and adjudications. For almost two decades, he has fought to protect the constitutional rights of every person and to uphold the promise of fairness and equal justice under the law.
His commitment to justice is personal. Binh came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam, where his family arrived with little more than hope, determination, and a belief in the opportunities this country could provide. His father taught his six sons that education and hard work are the keys to opportunity and that success carries a duty to serve others.
Through perseverance and sacrifice, Binh earned his undergraduate degree from San Diego State University and his law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law, financing his education through student loans. His journey shaped his belief that financial hardship should never stand in the way of a person’s dreams or potential.
Binh’s life is grounded in family, service, and community. He has been married to his wife for more than 19 years, and together they are raising their three children with the same values that have guided his life: education, discipline, empathy, and service. Their oldest son is a college freshman pursuing a future in medicine. Their daughter is a hardworking high school student who balances academics with a part-time job. Their youngest son, now a high school freshman, also hopes to enter the healing professions.
As a candidate for Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, Seat No. 39, Binh Dang brings deep trial experience, sound judgment, and a lifelong commitment to treating every person who enters the courtroom with dignity, respect, and compassion.
The Los Angeles County Superior Court is the largest trial court system in the nation. It serves a diverse population and manages an immense volume of cases. Within that scale, the Court demonstrates clear strengths while facing areas that require continued improvement.
What Is Working Well
The system continues to operate reliably under significant demand. Accessibility has improved in practical ways. Online services, remote appearances, and digital tools allow litigants to participate without always traveling to a courthouse. These changes reduce time burdens and costs while expanding access for working individuals and families.
Innovation has improved efficiency. Remote hearings, streamlined filing systems, and alternative dispute resolution programs help reduce delays and resolve cases more quickly.
Community-based services have strengthened engagement. Self-help centers, language access services, and diversion programs provide meaningful support for individuals navigating the system without legal representation.
What Needs Improvement
Perceptions of fairness and impartiality require attention. Some residents question whether outcomes are consistent and free from bias. These concerns affect the Court’s legitimacy.
Transparency and accountability must improve. Many members of the public find court processes difficult to understand. Greater clarity and openness would strengthen confidence.
User experience remains a challenge. The system can be difficult to navigate, especially for self-represented litigants. Clearer guidance and better communication are necessary.
The perception of politicization undermines confidence. Courts must continue to demonstrate independence through consistent and principled decision-making.
Conclusion
The Los Angeles County Superior Court is a strong institution that continues to deliver justice on a scale. It has made meaningful progress in access, innovation, and service.
The next step is to deepen public trust.
