For me, the most important issue in this race is adequate funding to identify and implement effective programs and resources for all students, including those with special needs. Working for the good of our children should always be the School Board’s number one priority.
Communication, relationship-building, and community involvement are key aspects in helping individuals move forward in the same direction. As a former teacher and principal, I would employ strategies proven effective in the past as well as seek out new ones to enhance communication and build relationships within and among the various stakeholder groups, all of which should lead to greater community involvement.

1.) The most important issue in being a school board member is not to single out one issue but to deal with the myriad of issues that come before the Board in a level headed, thoughtful manner. Making the school system as good as it can be within the budgetary limitations with which it has to work is the overall issue. A myriad of other issues come before a school board and they are all important. But making sure the system has dedicated teachers and comfortable and safe facilities in which students can enthusiastically learn is the important, overall issue.
Working with all the stakeholders requires one to be, first and foremost, a good listener. And a good listener is respectful to those with whom he/she is speaking. Coming into a school board position thinking one has all the answers is a red flag for constituents. The desire to work together, not being afraid to compromise when necessary is all important while at the same time standing firm on issues of which you are certain.
