It is the job of the county commissioners to work towards a better future for the county while maintaining a constant feedback loop with the people they represent. The county commission must plan and fund good public services like schools and first responders, and make sure that these services actually address the needs of the community. Commissioners must ensure that the county is affordable to live in by promoting programs to reduce cost, control development, and provide basic essentials where possible. The county commissioners must work on these programs with input from their constituents for the betterment of the county in the short term and in the long term.
I would like to create a program to provide free breakfast and lunch to children in our county schools. I would like to plan Rutherford County development to support walkability and green spaces, allowing our kids to walk to school, our communities to live healthier lives, and our county to remain beautiful while continuing to grow.
The school meal program can be accomplished by using some of the unbudgeted funds that the county has access to. We can also seek to take advantage of programs like the Community Eligibility Provision from the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which is currently used by Murfreesboro City Schools. As for creating walkable and protected green spaces, I would work with the County Planning Department as they look at rolling out the PlanRutherford development plan to find places that the county can seek to protect and to make sure that development is done in a responsible manner in regards to community needs and infrastructure availability.
