Office Sought
State Representative, District 26 House Seat B
I will focus on redirecting the legislature to address real issues that affect voters. These include protecting our public lands and water supply that are at the core of our economy, effectively investing in public education and infrastructure, and ensuring that health care is accessible across all rural communities in District 26.
I will bring to the important issues a deep knowledge of Idaho, research into the details of each challenge we face, and a commitment to collaboration and respect as the foundation of civil discourse.
My wife and I run a small farm in Blaine County, irrigating our land to grow produce for local markets. This effort is a transition from my work for nearly 30 years teaching at Idaho universities, including 22 years as a professor of American history and Idaho history at Idaho State University. In that work, I have supervised employees, served on statewide boards, trained and collaborated with public school teachers, and engaged with local communities across Idaho. Earlier, I spent 9 years with the U.S. Forest Service as a wilderness ranger and wildland firefighter.
Idaho faces severe budget problems from fiscal mismanagement in recent years, which strains the resources available to address critical issues of education, infrastructure, health care, and rising costs. In addition, public lands and water face serious challenges due to drought, which threatens irrigation supply and increases fire danger. I will address these issues by emphasizing how we can maximize the return on public investments that generates the greatest benefit for the widest range of Idaho communities. I will not support actions that divert valuable time and resources to actions that divide our communities or that benefit only special interests.
My commitment to public service goes back decades in multiple parts of Idaho, contributing to the needs of local communities in ways that improve shared resources and promote the quality of life that we enjoy in our state. I have volunteered in projects large and small, staying longer to do what needs to get done. Idaho has a great tradition of service, and I want the legislature to facilitate leaders in volunteer service, not overburden them by neglecting the responsibilities of the state.
