Office Sought
Idaho State Representative District 8 Seat B
I want to ensure that government works for the citizens. I will focus on passing laws and budgets that provide the necessary services and freedoms that make all of our lives better. The current legislature spends far too much time punching down at the most vulnerable members of our society, rather than protecting everyone's freedoms and helping to ensure that basic needs are met. There isn't much point to fighting culture wars when we went from a 2.5 billion dollar surplus two years ago to a 550 million dollar deficit that required significant budget cuts for state services; this affects all of us. I want to see those that can afford it step up and contribute a fair share (e.g., the wealthy, corporations, etc.) in order to help meet needs.
I have served as the Boise County Democratic Party chair for several years now. I also serve on the state party's Finance committee, and am on the Idaho Democratic Party Rural Caucus executive committee, where we bring forward and advocate for issues that affect our rural communities. I have also been a public servant for 17 years, and have been able to see how programs can make a positive impact on people's lives. I am also a husband and a father, and those are my guiding lights. I want all of our children to be able to grow up in the absolute best world possible, and that experience keeps me grounded.
I think the most significant changes I will be able to address in this position are focusing on affordability and personal freedoms. Wages are relatively stagnant and costs are increasing; attempts to make housing more affordable are squashed by the legislature (e.g., rental increase caps, etc.). Women's health, education, rising healthcare costs, healthcare access - these are all issues I will focus on. I want to bring reasoned dialogue back to the legislature. I am also aware that one more individual voice may not be able to overcome the current mindset, but I will use my voice to advocate for everyone in our district that is struggling and ensure that we all get a fair shot at living our best lives.
I was born and raised in Idaho, and I cherish the traditional Idaho values instilled in me. People should be free to live their lives how they choose; people should be able to afford living without having to choose between what basic need they must sacrifice with this week's paycheck; our kids should be able to receive a quality education in a safe location that sets them up to have the future they deserve; no one should go bankrupt because they can't afford the healthcare they need. As your representative, I will do everything in my power to let all of us live our lives with as little worry as possible in the manner we see fit.
