I have served for 3 years on the city council. During that time I have gained valuable experience not only in leadership, but also in learning how to negotiate and collaborate with others towards achieving common objectives. During my time on city council, I have served on various committees, undergone extensive training, and learned how to do this job in the way that most benefits the community. My experience as a financial counselor, my training in conflict resolution, a willingness to think outside of the box, to have an open mind, willingness to listen, and a growth mindset are all valuable assets that I bring for our community.
In collaboration with the community, I will push for an updated comprehensive plan that will help to codify my desire for smart business growth in Stafford. Stafford is the gateway of Ft. Bend and has tremendous potential as an important regional transportation nexus. Sadly, previous leaders have allowed far too many warehouses to take up much of our retail space. I will continue with my commitment to vote against new warehouses and will work to attract retail which is vital for our sales tax base. Finally, I will work to landbank the island to become an attractive new shopping area.
My first priority for our community is with our residents and improving our quality of life here. Critical to this is maintaining and improving our security through robust, community-minded, and well-trained police and fire fighting forces. Investments into fixing drainage issues and fixing our aging infrastructure will improve the property values and image of our community. Residents shouldn´t have to travel to neighboring cities for healthy recreational opportunities. Our parks need to be updated and beautified. Trails and sidewalks will help improve connectivity and promote healthier living. These enhancements will improve our pride in place and the community feel, but also they will require an investment to improve our future.
I am not in favor of a decaying community. I am not in favor of faded street signs, dilapidated parks, drainage problems, and streets filled with potholes. I am not in favor of skimping out on necessary equipment, training, and hiring of a robust fire and police force, or for taking our chances with the next emergency. Flexibility is required regarding finding resources to meet the needs of our community. Failing to adapt, when the situation requires, is nonsensical. The voters must decide.
Check the tape. I have 3 years of stalwart support of our public safety departments. This is the foundation of the social contract that citizens expect when creating a local government. With my reelection, the police, fire, and public works departments will continue to be supported and funded in working with the community to be responsive to the evolving challenges that we face. We cannot skimp on their training or ability to respond to the needs of our citizens.
People want to live in nice neighborhoods. People want to live near nice amenities. Property values increase when neighborhoods are safe, attractive, walkable, near parks and recreation and well-maintained. When you buy a home and live there with your family, you are not just seeking shelter, you are putting down roots and staking your claim in your community. Homeowners take pride in their yard, their home, and their image in their community. Sadly, our current tax structure and market demands promote more and more homes to become rental properties which can sometimes lead to less pride of place and upkeep by the occupants. We need to promote home ownership and invest in beautifying our neighborhoods. It will be worth it.
