DUTIES: The Democratic Central Committee is responsible for leading and organizing the day-to-day operations of the local Democratic Party. The Committee recommends candidates to the Governor to fill vacancies in state and local offices when a member of the party resigns or dies in office. County Central Committees work with the State Central Committee, which in turn works with the national party.TERM: Four years, no term limit.SALARY: None.HOW ELECTED: Democratic Central Committee members are elected by registered party members. Some seats are filled at large. Other seats are divided amongst the councilmanic districts. Voters may vote for the candidates of their choice. The winners will be determined by the greatest number of votes, while taking into consideration that those elected will be as equally divided by gender as possible.WEBSITE: Maryland Democratic Party

SPECIAL ELECTIONS: When a vacancy occurs in the General Assembly, the party Central Committee appoints someone to complete the rest of the term. Do you support special elections to fill these vacancies?
GENERAL ASSEMBLY VACANCIES: What criteria will you use to choose a person to fill a vacancy in the Maryland General Assembly?
MOTIVATION: Why do you want to serve on your party's Central Committee?
VACANCY SELECTIONS: How can you ensure that your appointment decisions serve the best interest of the community when filling vacant positions?
Yes. Representatives should be elected, not appointed, so voters have a direct say in who represents them. The current system exists largely because special election costs would fall on the affected counties, competing with needs like education, roads, and public safety. I support reforms that have the state bear the cost and hold special elections when possible, while allowing appointments if less than one year remains in the term to ensure districts are not left without representation.
Process: The selection must strictly follow party bylaws. Recruitment should be broad and well publicized across multiple platforms, with proactive outreach to underrepresented communities. It should be transparent and documented so the public understands how the decision is made.
Criteria: Candidates must show community or electoral engagement, a strong work ethic, ability to collaborate across interests, respect for democratic institutions, and a clear vision for serving all residents
I have served since 2020 because of the urgent need to strengthen the Democratic Party on the Eastern Shore. After 5 yrs as Chair, I’ve recruited and trained younger leaders to step forward. This year, for the first time in operational memory, we proactively recruited Dem candidates to contest seats often left uncontested. I focus on strengthening party infrastructure, expanding our presence in the community, and working with like-minded groups to reach underrepresented communities.
Do you mean vacancies on the committee itself? Same criteria as given above for General Assembly, to which I would add specific organizational skills, such as communications, fundraising, community outreach, volunteer management, database management, etc. We're extremely short handed.
