I bring a new perspective to the role. I'm looking to be a voice and an advocate for parents and students alike. I am a free thinker who comes up with out-of-the-box ideas, which is something really special and very important in this role. Not every answer is going to be black and white.
Parents need to be engaged and learn and understand strategies to help their children learn, especially when working with them at home, whether studying or helping with homework. Teachers need to communicate with the parents about what the student is struggling with in the classroom to avoid learning issues. Board members work for the parents to keep them informed about district issues and challenges, and should also work with teachers to better understand their classroom struggles.
It's important to listen to the teachers and to understand their needs. This will help with retention. Helping make their jobs easier with simple asks will make everyone win. Another way to help with retention is to keep teachers at their home schools and to do everything in our power to avoid moving them around the district. Building this great culture in Cecil County will make people want to work here and not leave for other opportunities.
Technology can be a great tool for our teachers and our students, but it shouldn't be the end-all be-all. We still need the ability to look things up in books and do basic math on paper, to stimulate critical thinking skills. As for cell phones in school, students shouldn't use them during classroom hours.
