NC SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE DISTRICT 16B SEAT 02

The NC Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in North Carolina. It hears all felony cases and certain misdemeanor cases. In civil matters, superior courts hear civil disputes involving amounts over $25,000. Judges are elected for 8 year terms. The Superior Courts are divided into 5 divisions and further into 48 districts. There are 109 regular Superior Court judges under current state law, in addition to "special judges" who are appointed by the Governor, not elected. Judges rotate from district to district within their division every six months in order to avoid the danger of corruption or favoritism. Legislation in 2023 numerically realigned/renumbered the Superior Court and other court districts to align with the Prosecutorial districts.

I have substantial experience handling criminal, civil and administrative matters in Superior Court. I also have appellate law experience which gives me a comprehensive understanding of errors made by lower courts. I appreciate how the court decisions affect our community, and I am committed to ensuring fair treatment and the safety of our community. My experience, judgment, and dedication equip me to serve effectively as a Superior Court judge.
As a judicial candidate, I understand that I am running in a partisan election. However, if elected, my role as a judge is to apply the law fairly and impartially, independent of any political platform. My decisions must be guided by the facts, the law, and the Constitution, not party priorities or pressure. While my experience and values may shape my perspective, I am committed to ensuring every person who comes before the court is treated with fairness, dignity, and compassion, and that justice is applied equally to all members of the community.
There are many barriers to justice. At their core, the barriers are about access and the scarcity thereof. Justice should not be dependent on class, and treating everyone equally will not create equity. Instead, the court system must ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, be it court appointed counsel or assistance with pro se filings. Justice must be accessible to all, which means removing financial barriers to the extent possible.
