NC SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE DISTRICT 36 SEAT 01

The NC Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in North Carolina. It hears all felony cases and certain misdemeanor cases. In civil matters, superior courts hear civil disputes involving amounts over $25,000. Judges are elected for 8 year terms. The Superior Courts are divided into 5 divisions and further into 48 districts. There are 109 regular Superior Court judges under current state law, in addition to "special judges" who are appointed by the Governor, not elected. Judges rotate from district to district within their division every six months in order to avoid the danger of corruption or favoritism. Legislation in 2023 numerically realigned/renumbered the Superior Court and other court districts to align with the Prosecutorial districts.

I’m not only an experienced trial attorney, I’m the only candidate in this race who has appeared before the NC Court of Appeals, the NC Supreme Court and in Federal Court. One of my cases changed the law in the State of North Carolina. I’m a Navy Veteran, having served on Active Duty and in the Reserves so I have a wealth of experience outside of the law that no other candidate has. I’ve been a servant to my community all of my life, and I bring a servant’s attitude to this office
I’m a Conservative, that means that I follow the law as it is written and my personal feelings or party affiliations have nothing to do with my decisions. My role is to ensure that all parties are treated fairly under the rules of criminal or civil procedure, to apply the law to the facts and to provide a decision that is soundly based on existing law and facts. I apply the law with deference to the legislative process that formed the law. I will not substitute my own ideas or feelings for the law as it is written.
My core expertise is in areas that frequently come up for appeal to the NC Court of Appeals and the NC Supreme Court. I’ve served as an expert witness in real property matters and I’m frequently consulted by other attorneys regarding real property matters. I’ve handled and litigated cases involving real property matters, contract matters and personal injury matters in Superior Court across the western half of North Carolina. I started work at the age of 16 in the furniture factories in Lenoir, NC to make money to attend college. I know this community and the struggles it faces.
If I’m fortunate enough to be elected, I believe I will be the only Superior Court Judge in the State of North Carolina who has served in the US Military in a warfighting role. I’ve served in the Persian Gulf, in the Caribbean with drug enforcement operations, with the Navy Seals providing port security, and I’ve served as a Battle Watch Commander for the Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet. I’ve been responsible for the lives of sailors as Officer of the Deck on a Guided Missile Destroyer. After being responsible for the safety of a warship, being responsible for nuclear weapons and briefing Admirals on a regular basis, I feel that I am more than capable of handling a courtroom.
Position/philosophy statement I strive to treat each person who appears before me professionally, respectfully, and without bias, and to apply the law as written.

For more than three decades, I have served in courtrooms across North Carolina as a litigator and now as a Superior Court Judge. My experience spans the full breadth of criminal law, including capital murder, drug trafficking, sexual offenses, DWI, domestic violence, probation violations, and Motions for Appropriate Relief.

I also bring extensive experience in civil litigation, having handled matters involving domestic disputes, heart balm actions, personal injury, complex construction cases, and other civil disputes. In addition, I have served as a certified family financial mediator, assisting attorneys and their clients in resolving high-conflict cases outside the courtroom.
As a Superior Court Judge, I do not allow personal views, partisan interests, or public opinion to influence my decisions. My duty is to protect the rights and liberties of all people guaranteed by the U.S. and North Carolina Constitutions and laws. I am committed to providing a fair, independent, and accessible court and to faithfully applying the law as written.
Conflict is inherent in litigation. Effectively managing that conflict and guiding cases toward a fair resolution comes with experience—and I have spent more than three decades as a courtroom litigator. My certification as a mediator in domestic matters has further strengthened my ability to resolve disputes, maintain decorum in the courtroom, and ensure that every party is heard and treated with fairness and respect.
