I come from a background of working in public service. I began my career through the Texas Legislative Internship Program, fielding constituent calls in a city council office. I went on to work for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Gene Green. I then decided to run for office, knocking on doors and making calls 12 hours a day, seven days a week. After becoming the State Rep. for HD 140, I went back to school to achieve my law degree from the University of Houston, and am now able to leverage my expertise of the law in the State House. But most importantly, I am a member of this community — I was born and raised here, my family lives here, and my kids are growing up here just like I did.
All Texans deserve access to high-quality, affordable health care. I have long advocated for Medicaid expansion in Texas, which is the number one action the Legislature can take to improve health care access and outcomes across the state, and reduce costs for everyone.
I have also long been a supporter of improving access to quality, affordable mental health care in Texas. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have supported efforts to increase investment in rebuilding and expanding our state hospital system, which has led to new facilities and hundreds of additional inpatient beds. We have more work to do, and I will continue to support efforts to increase our investment in these critical resources.
As a product of Texas public schools, I believe that every student — regardless of background — has the right to a quality education. I have also consistently supported efforts to get more dollars into our underfunded public school system by increasing the per-student basic allotment and raising teacher pay.
I am a strong opponent of vouchers as I believe they irreparably harm our neighborhood schools. However, now that they've been enacted, I support strict guardrails: mandatory financial audits, public disclosure of how funds are spent, academic accountability standards comparable to public schools, and anti-fraud enforcement.
I believe water is the number one issue facing our state, and particularly, my district. I mean this in all respects — over the long term, we are facing drought conditions and issues with safe, clean drinking water supply. In Harris County specifically, we are struggling with flood control and funding infrastructure that will keep our residents, homes and roadways safe during disaster conditions. Finally, we are seeing skyrocketing utility costs for water and sewage in my community — aging infrastructure and deceptive business practices are leading to water bills tripling for my constituents. It is absolutely top of mind for all of my neighbors when I’m out working in the community, and is something I intend to prioritize next Session.
