After almost 20 years as a trial attorney (over 100 felony jury trials) plus half a year (so far) serving as Judge of the 512th, I bring knowledge and hands-on experience unmatched by my opponent.
Every person who comes into my courtroom is listened to and treated with respect and dignity. As Judge, I make myself available to ensure there are regular dockets and consistent opportunities for trial to prevent unnecessary delays. Decisions are made according to the law. No person is above or beneath the law: all are bound and protected by it in the same way.
Having served as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney, and having been a business owner and represented people hurt by businesses, I always evaluate both/all sides of an issue before me while keeping the law always at the forefront. The law decides the issue; my experience ensures individual people aren’t forgotten in the process.
Access to the Court, meaning the ability to schedule hearings and have matters heard in a timely fashion is paramount. As Judge, I work hard to make myself available for exactly that reason: due process requires it. Since April, my court has already had 6 jury trials - an outward sign that access to justice and due process are alive and well in my court!
The law provides all the guidance necessary to accomplish this task. Bail factors written in the law must be considered by the Judge in determining the amount of bail and any bond conditions. Sometimes, giving a person access to mental health and/or substance abuse treatment can treat the underlying issue(s), thereby reducing the risks of that person reoffending. Each individual is different.
I have over 25 years experience as a felony trial lawyer. I have tried serious cases as both a chief felony prosecutor as well as a defense lawyer. I've tried cases in several counties in Texas.
Of course I will be fair and impartial, while following the law. Having worked on both sides of the aisle in the legal system, I have established a solid foundation for serving people from all walks of life. I understand people have layers and are complex. I see ALL people and would make certain that no one gets special favors due to their socio-economic status or connections with the fortunate.
My personal background has given me the foundation needed to engage with everyone, no matter their background. I've grown up with less than fortunate means. I've gone to school with people from all walks of life. I've worked with folks who come from different backgrounds from me. No matter where I stand, I can comfortably engage. I never feel or act as if I am out of my element.
While we have to follow the law, there is no one formula when applying the law. I will handle each case based upon its own merits, facts and circumstances when applying the law. And I will engage and treat every individual with dignity and respect. No matter what they are facing in the court.
When it comes to violent crime, we have to be tough as public safety is a priority. However, let's be smarter in how we deal with nonviolent crime. We should utilize all resources available to reduce recidivism. I'd engage community organizations as stake holders when coming up with solutions to reduce low level crime. The more we all invest in our community, the less crime we'll experience.
