What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
What initiatives will you implement to facilitate the resolution of small claims cases and landlord-tenant disputes, and what is your approach to eviction proceedings to ensure that the rights of all parties are fairly considered?
I believe my extensive judicial experience, demonstrated leadership, and commitment to public service have prepared me well to continue serving as Justice of the Peace. Throughout my years on the bench, I have presided over thousands of cases involving a broad range of matters within the jurisdiction of the Justice Court. This experience has provided me with a thorough understanding of the law, court procedures, and the challenges faced by the individuals who come before the court.
I've had the honor to serve in judicial leadership positions and within the community to improve the administration of justice.
I believe the characteristics most important to judicial service are integrity, experience, patience, fairness and good judgment,
Throughout my tenure, I have worked to make the Justice Court accessible, efficient, and understandable, particularly in small claims and landlord-tenant matters where many parties represent themselves. I continue to look for opportunities to improve court procedures, provide clear information about the court process, and utilize technology and alternative dispute resolution when appropriate to facilitate the efficient and fair resolution of cases.
Eviction proceedings require particular attention because they involve important rights and significant consequences for both landlords and tenants. My approach is to ensure that each party has a meaningful opportunity to be heard, understands the court process, and is treated with dignity.
As a renter and working Texan, I am acutely aware of the struggles working class Texans face. I have experienced exactly what goes wrong with our JP court and I know how to fix it. With my lived experience, I have realized just how important and crucial our JP courts are to regular people, especially in times of rising costs and living expenses. I speak with folks facing evictions nearly everyday and see firsthand how the current system fails them.
I will implement a robust eviction diversion program with access to free legal aid, extended court hours, weekend dockets, virtual hearings and a fully staffed courthouse. Our current court does not consider the reality of our working Texans. I do not want any person to miss a day's worth of pay to resolve court matters. By having tenants connected to legal aid with options for virtual hearings, I can ensure tenants and landlords have complete access to our justice system, quickly resolve disputes and properly attempt mediation efforts. Along with extended and weekend hours, having adequate court staff will help prevent stalled dockets, and fully streamline our JP court, so I can respect everyone's time with business in the courtroom.
