Responsibilities: Subject to limitations imposed by city charter and constitution of the State of Ohio, hold all legislative powers for the municipality. Levy taxes and incur debts. Create and/or abolish other offices, departments, divisions, bureaus, boards and commissions of the municipality; fix the number of employees and set pay and benefits for these organizations. Adopt ordinances to provide a number of services including zoning and land use, housing codes, construction of streets, utility lines, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, public utilities. Purchase and dispose of property. Decisions are made by the council as a whole at public meetings. Appoint city manager.Canton City Council is the legislative body of City government, comprised of elected officials who assemble for the purpose of adopting measures of municipal law.The City of Canton is divided into nine wards. Each ward elects one member to represent the ward, along with three Council members-At-Large. City Council therefore, consists of twelve members.In addition to having the authority to enact legislation, ward council members represent the specific interests of the citizens in their respective wards.
