Biography
Matt Hamel was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney in November 2021. Prior to his election as Chesapeake’s chief prosecutor, Mr. Hamel served on the Chesapeake City Council from 2018 through 2021. Mr. Hamel is an eyewitness to the September 11th attacks. Working for a bank by day and going to law school at night, that day altered his life forever. He joined the Navy and his family relocated to Chesapeake in 2005. Mr. Hamel served as a Navy JAG attorney, prosecutor, Iraq veteran, as well as a Staff Judge Advocate to several Commands and Staffs. He continues to serve as a Commander in the Navy Reserves. Mr. Hamel served on the Board of Directors for Hampton Roads Transit and the YMCA, and he is a life member of VFW Post 2894.
It comes down to resources, human and financial. On average, our office handles 2,500 felony and thousands of misdemeanor charges each year with fewer than 30 lawyers. And like it or not, what they and the people who support them get paid could easily be matched in the private sector. Thankfully, year-over-year violent crime rates have steadily dropped since I took office, but we can do more with more financial support from the General Assembly to keep Chesapeake one of America’s safest cities.
Experience, integrity and leadership. . . and a commitment to service that has guided me since September 11. I have seen suffering, and know firsthand that fairness and an evenhanded approach are essential to justice.
After a tour of Navy duty in Iraq during OIF, I was assigned to Norfolk as a young Judge Advocate General lawyer. We could have lived anywhere in Hampton Roads, but Chesapeake was the place where we chose to put down roots. Our schools are among the best, our streets are among the safest, and we can be in a city or in the country in a matter of minutes. Obviously, how we grow and prosper depends on the kinds of choices we all make, but the sky’s the limit in Chesapeake.
