49 years of progressive law enforcement at the federal, state, and local level
I have long been on the forefront of seeking real solutions to address the mental health crisis impacting jails across the Commonwealth. Tragically, our facility now provides the largest number of mental health beds in Virginia. More than half of those in our custody have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and nearly one-third live with a serious mental illness.
This reality underscores the urgent need for change. I will continue to advocate for increased treatment space and expanded mental health staffing to better serve this complex population. At the same time, I will push the Commonwealth to significantly expand inpatient mental health treatment facilities, ensuring that those in need receive the care and restoration they deserve.
With 49 years of progressive law enforcement experience at the federal, state, and local levels, I have had the honor of leading the Newport News Sheriff’s Office for the past 20 years. Under my leadership, our office has earned and maintained accreditation from both the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. These accreditations—validated through rigorous audits by independent commissioners—are a testament to our commitment to excellence and professionalism.
Beyond our core duties, my deputies work hand-in-hand with the Newport News Police Department to ensure the safety of our city. They also serve on DEA and ATF task forces, targeting drug trafficking operation
Newport News is a diverse, dynamic, and welcoming city—the heart of the Peninsula—where people come to work, shop, play, and raise their families. Everything you need is just minutes away. This is home, and I am proud to love and serve this city.
